Make a Heart Flower Bouquet

A Bouquet of Heart Flowers Will Last Long After the Roses Are Dead in the Trash

A homemade heart flower bouquet is easy, fun to make, and a chance to use you creativity. Construction paper works best for heart flowers because of its thickness and variety of colors but you can use any kind of paper. Heart flowers can be made with any colors or combination of paper. For this project you will need construction paper, a glue stick, chenille or pipe cleaners for stems, single hole punch, scissors, a few small buttons, and a few larger buttons.

Build a Flower

To build the first flower, cut 3 to 5 red hearts on the fold. This means make a fold in your construction paper about 2 inches from the edge. Instead of cutting the entire heart shape and struggling to get both sides even, just cut half a heart shape on the fold and your heart shapes will always even. Choose a second color construction paper, like purple, and cut 3 to 5 smaller hearts on the fold. Choose a third color construction paper, like light pink, and cut 3 to 5 even smaller hearts on the fold. Make the petals by using a glue stick to glue a mid sized purple heart to the center of a larger red heart. Glue the light pink heart to the center of the purple heart. Repeat until you have all hearts glued with three layers each. Using a single hole punch make a hole in the "V" of each finished petal.

The assembly presses and holds the heart petals on the stem between the two buttons. The large button will be visible on the top of the finished flower but the smaller button will not be visible underneath the petals. To build the flower, thread the stem through the larger button and fold the stem about ΒΌ inches into a button hole to hold it in place. Thread each petal face up from the bottom of the stem until it is just under the button. Repeat until all the petals are in place making the flower. Adjust the petals until you are happy with the flower then thread the smaller button on the stem and press it firmly in place under the petals to hold them in place. You have just made the first flower. Repeat the process until you have enough flowers for a bouquet. Tie the bouquet with a ribbon or arrange the flowers in a vase.

Variations

For fun you can make a potato stamp in a heart shape, or a name, or any shape you like. To make a potato stamp use a large russet potato, cut off about 3 inches of one end, and cut your shape into the cut end. You can cut away potato leaving just the shape for the print or you can have a round print surface with the shape carved out of the center. Use acrylic craft paint and brush to print with the potato stamp to decorate your paper.

Tips

Dress up your paper flowers with glitter, sequins, metallic craft rope, or ribbons. Add leaves or greens to your bouquet by cutting the shapes on the fold, punching a hole in the end of each leaf, and threading them on the stem after all the petals are in place.
