Make Homemade Cards from Old Art Calendars

For Birthdays, Holidays, Special Occasions

Anni Sofferet
Old art calendars are ideal for making stunning homemade cards for any occasion. Made from high-quality paper and with high-quality images, old art calendar prints are even the perfect size for making beautiful homemade cards.

To make homemade cards with a personalized, artistic effect, I chose M. C. Escher's famous drawing, "Drawing Hands". I then added a message on the image, as if the hands had drawn it as part of the original art.

Finally, I added a silver glitter ribbon to "lock" the card. To make similar homemade cards from old art calendars, just follow these easy steps.

#1. Make Homemade Cards from the Right Art-Calendars

I recommend choosing surrealist art calendars, which leave room for you to add a personalized greeting that seems to belong in the drawing itself. This will allow you to make homemade cards that have an enchanting appeal. You can find art calendars in calendar stores online or in malls.

#2. Make Homemade Cards in a Flash

Once you've chosen the images from which to make homemade cards, just tear them out of the art calendar carefully, or cut them out with a utility knife. Glue the page onto a watercolor canvas or other thick paper and let it dry. Next, fold the art calendar print in half and press down the fold firmly. This is all it takes to make homemade cards from old art calendars. Now you can personalize them.

#3. Personalize Your Homemade Cards by Hand

To make homemade cards with a personalized, surrealist effect, be sure to choose a pen that matches the colors of the art calendar print. In the case of M. C. Escher, I used a carbon pencil. You can use indelible markers, which come in a range of colors. Before you write on your homemade cards, be sure to practice on waste sheet of paper.

#4. Personalize Your Homemade Cards with Elegant Hand Lettering

To make homemade cards with elegant lettering, print out your message in the lettering font and size you like. If you are good at calligraphy, just use this print out as a visual guide for writing on your homemade cards. Once more, be sure to practice before you write on your homemade cards.

#5. Personalize Your Homemade Cards with Glitter Lettering

To make homemade cards with stunning glitter lettering, begin by printing your personalized message in the lettering font and size you like. Next, press the printed paper to a window and trace the reflection of the letters on the back of the paper. Glue glitter ribbon over the printed letters, then cut them out using the reverse-side image on the back of the paper. (See the step-by-step instructions with pictures.)

#6. Make Homemade Cards with Glitter Locks

To make homemade cards that seem like a locked treasure box, cut a strip of glitter ribbon that can fold around the middle of your homemade cards 1.5 times. Look at the picture I included with the article, to see how I folded the glitter ribbon to complete my homemade card.

Now that you know how to make homemade cards from old art calendars, be sure to create these stunning greetings in a range of colors, using magenta, teal, red, silver or gold glitter ribbons.
