Make Homemade Cards for Valentine's Day: Heart of My Hearts

Linda Louise Johnson
To make homemade cards this Valentine's Day, just cut his heart out. In fact, cut a lot of hearts out. Cut them out of construction paper in red, fuschia, and pink. Cut out hearts in graduated sizes and make cards of layered hearts for all the loves of your life.

Homemade Card Version 1: Valentine Hearts in Two Sizes
To make this homemade card for Valentine's Day, draw a heart shape that fits within an 6 by 6 inch square. Cut it out and trace around it in the center on sheet of pink paper, red or fuschia paper. Fold the sheet of construction paper in half in the center of the heart, and cut out the heart you've traced.

Next, draw a heart shape that fits within a 3 by 3 inch square. Cut it out, and then trace around it three times on each of three sheets of construction paper: pink, red and fuchsia. Fold the construction papers in half and cut out the small hearts.

Now you have one large heart and nine smaller hearts to make your Heart of My Heart Valentine's Day homemade card. Find the large heart in the red or fuchsia color. Pick out three small hearts in the other colors. One red, one pink, one fuchsia. With a hole punch, make two small holes in the center of each heart, just large enough for a folded ribbon to pass through. When you place the small hearts in the center of the big one, all the holes should line up.

Homemade Card Version 2: Valentine Hearts in Multiple Sizes
To make this version of the homemade card, use the large Valentine heart in the 6 inch size (or any size you want it to be), and cut out smaller hearts in graduated sizes. For instance, 6 by 6, 5 by 5, 4 by 4, 3 by 3, 2 by 2 and even 1 by 1 inch sizes.

Next, select the large heart, and then select all the smaller hearts in the graduated sizes you've cut out. With a hole punch, make two small holes in the center of each heart just large enough for a folded ribbon to pass through. When you place the smaller hearts in the center of the big one all the holes should line up.

Valentine's Day Card message: "Why I Opened My Heart to You"

Use the above or any other message. Fold the big heart, and on the right front side, write that message.

"Because....."

Now think of all the reasons you love him and write them on the smaller hearts. Write "Because" on the left side of a small heart. Now, write the reason like "you're such a hunk" on the right side of a smaller heart. The heart now reads "Because you're such a hunk." (More sample messages below.)

Obviously you can use as many reasons as you like. Just cut out enough small hearts for all the reasons you want to include. After you have written all the reasons on all the smaller hearts it's time to assemble your card.

Homemade Cards with Hearts on Top of Hearts.

Layer the Valentine hearts on top of each other with the smallest on top. Line up the holes. Cut an 8 to 10 inch length of narrow pink or white ribbon and thread it through the holes so both ends of the ribbon come out the back of the big heart. Tie the ribbon in a bow. If you used curling ribbon curl the ends.

Now you have a Heart of my Heart homemade Valentine's Day card that is virtually a little book of hearts.

Child Friendly Homemade Card for Valentine's Day.

You can make smaller or bigger versions of the Heart of My Heart cards. For a simpler version that is perfect for children to make, use just one big heart for the outside and one small heart for the inside. For instance, make the biggest heart fit inside a 4 by 4 square, and the smallest to fit inside a 2 by 2 square, or any variation in between. Have the child write "Why I love Daddy" (or whatever is appropriate) on the outside right front of the big heart, and then write a reason such as "because you play catch with me" on the small heart. Thread the ribbon through to assemble the card.
I Love You, Because . . .

Here are some sample messages, just to inspire you.

Because you're such a hunk
Because you make my heart go pittypat
Because you call me your petit chou/lovebug/hot mama (or alternative)
Because you can always make me laugh
Because you've been there for me through everything
Because you smell good except after racquetball
Because you appreciate everything I do for you
Because you laugh at my jokes
Because you never laugh at my dreams
Because your face still lights up when you see me
Because my face still lights up when I see you
Because you're so kind and thoughtful
Because you're so generous
Because you're not afraid to be yourself
Because you stand up for what you believe
Because of the way you look at me with those deep blue eyes
Because you love me just the way I am
Because you once took a splinter out of my finger
Because you once rescued a baby bird
Because you let me love you
Because you're a good kisser
Because you're a great Dad, a good son, a wonderful husband
Because I trust you
Because you trust me
Because you love God as much as I do
Because you let me share my heart with you
Because we make such fabulous children
Because you forgive me even when my evil twin takes over
Because you're so gorgeous
Because you're so good to me
Because you give it your all
Because you never give up
Because you follow your dream
