Make a Low-Fat, Low-Sodium Healthy Snack Mix!

Kate Baxter
Whether you're into making healthier food choices for weight loss or general fitness, try this low-fat, low-sodium snack mix as as alternative to commercial snack mixes.

Store-bought mixes such as Party Mix make lots of claims to being healthy, but a quick look at the labels tell you otherwise. Even mixes claiming to reduce the fat or sodium sneak in such less-healthy ingredients as hydrogenated oils, MSG and other flavor enhancers, and preservatives.

But, there's a healthier way to smart snacking! Just shake up a batch of this snack mix, and have it on hand for whenever you crave a sensible between-meals treat.

HEALTHY SNACK MIX (makes 6 servings)

Ingredients

1/2 cup corn cereal (such as Corn Chex or Kashi)
1/2 cup rice cereal (see above)
1 cup unsalted air-popped popcorn
1 cup unsalted pretzel sticks
1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
1/4 tsp. garlic powder
1/4 tsp. onion powder
1/8 tsp. chili powder, or to taste
1 Tbsp. grated Parmesan cheese

Directions

In a large bowl, combine the cereals, popcorn, and pretzels. Melt the butter, and add to it the garlic, onion, and chili powders. Slowly pour the spiced butter over the mixture in the bowl, stirring with a wooden spoon. Sprinkle on the parmesan, then toss.

Store snack mix in a large resealable bag, consuming within 48 hours for best taste. Or, divide into smaller snack bags, perfect for taking to work or class, or for putting in kids' lunches.
