Costumes aren't just for kids at Halloween. There is a huge market for costumes for children and adults, and if you are a good designer with excellent sewing skills, you can make a great deal of money in the costume making business. From elaborate fairy costumes with glittering wings to the traditional clown suit, the options for costume ideas are endless. The market for costumes these days is virtually endless, it seems, as well.

One of the biggest money-makers in the sewing business is period clothing. People will pay hundreds of dollars for well-designed renaissance and medieval type costumes for fairs and events. Renaissance fairs, highland games, civil war and other period reenactment groups are some of the places where people wear period costumes. You can make custom outfits, or run a booth and sell pre-made costumes for children and adults at one of these events.

Actors and actresses need costumes too. Offer your costume-making services to small theater groups, high school and college drama programs, and even to small film-makers who may not have large budgets for their wardrobe departments. Dance groups will need costumes as well.

Have a costume rental store. Rent costumes year-round to all types of people, for all kinds of holidays and events. Offer a variety of sizes for different costumes for all types of customers. This type of store would be relying on walk-in customers. You can rent costumes any where from 10 bucks to $100 dollars a day for more elaborate outfits. You could also do custom work as well for more profit.

Magicians, circus performers, clowns, and other entertainers need costumes for their performances. Sell costumes by mail order, or at specialty shops. You can also approach performers and offer your custom services.

Some costume makers specialize in costumes for dancers, ice skaters, pageant contestants, and other solitary performers. Costumes can get elaborate, and will need a very creative designer. Many performers will need many different costumes, even a new costume for each event.

If you decide costume making is for you, there is no doubt you will be able to find plenty of fulfilling and profitable work. There are many options for work in the costume making business. The competition in this business is there, but not overwhelmingly so. There is still plenty of room in business for more costume creators with talent and good designing skills.
