How can advertising exactly be defined? Well, it's actually simple-advertising can be defined as the type of paid but non personal type of communication of messages through various forms of media. Advertising usually will have some type of paid sponsor, while propaganda on the other hand doesn't. The significance of advertising within the United States is huge, more then 245 billion dollars is spent on advertising yearly!
Throughout a given day individuals are bombarded with advertising messages. They are bombarded with them when they go to school, when they go to work, when they are surfing the internet, when they read the local paper, when they turn on the television, and when they are driving. Advertising is practically inescapable and that's why so many consumers try their best to filter it out.
So, since the business world is so competitive, businesses must best optimize their profits that they spend on advertising so that they can generate the best return on their investment (roi). They do that by choosing the best advertising mediums to advertise their products in, as well as using better marketing strategies.
Can you guess what the number one medium for advertising used? Hurry up and take a quick guess and then continue reading.
Advertising-the number one medium that is used.
The number one medium used for advertising is television! This includes both broadcast and cable. Just about every American has a television set... many have multiple of sets in their house, and marketers/advertisers know that and they channel their companies' products through there. What trails behind this medium is then direct mail, and then that is followed by newspapers.
The type of advertising that has been rising quickly is what is known as internet or web advertising. Internet advertising has risen roughly 16 percent as of the last year alone. It's interesting to note that the general public, that's right you and me benefit greatly from advertising. First, some ads contains a lot of information and helps educates the consumer, and the third most used medium of advertising (newspaper) contains information about products, features, benefits, prices, discounts, specific location, and etc.
Direct mail advertising (the number two most used medium) is similar to that as well. Advertising not only educates individuals about products but it also gives us access to free television and radio programs. The money that advertisers invest for advertising within commercials will usually help take care of the production costs. Also, advertising helps take care of the bulk amount for magazines and newspapers cost.
If you think some of these publications are expensive already, then just imagine paying for the full costs if there were no advertising included in it.
When we are purchasing a magazine, we are usually paying mostly for the promotion and mailing expenses, and very little for the content itself. Now, let's switch topics a little.
Television, which is the number one medium for advertising used, can offer countless of benefits to advertisers, especially if they are targeting a national range of audience.
However, it can have its set backs, and one of them is its high expenses because television advertising doesn't come at low costs. For example, less then a minute of commercial advertising will usually cost a company roughly 2 million dollars... for less then two minutes on the super bowl.
So that's why I always try to study advertising commercials during the super bowl, because if companies are flocking over huge advertising sums then im sure they know what they are doing. However, television advertising is not always so blatant, a newer form of it has started recently and it's known as product placement.
In this form of advertising a famous movie star or celebrity of any sort can be seen with the product being advertised. For example, an actor eating a brand name bowl of cereal or a famous singer riding in a nice sports car is an example of this type of advertising.
This type of advertising is a little more subliminal. Advertisers are constantly adapting and changing. For example, with TiVo, consumers can now skip over commercials, but no matter what they do they can't skip over the product placement of brand named items within their television shows.
Next, is one type of advertising that has been growing greatly in the last several years and it is known as the infomercial or paid programming.
The infomercial is simply a full length television program that is dedicated just to promote and sell a product or service. Usually, if an individual have a high quality product, then it should be rather easy to sell it if the product is fully explained on why it can help an individual along with being presented nicely.
An infomercial will usually include lots of elements to try and persuade individuals to purchase such as drama, testimonials, stories, and graphical presentations.
Advertisers will usually try to make the infomercial look like an actual television program so that viewers won't think that they are getting hard sold too, no body like that. Some internet marketers are changing their focus from static sales letters, to ones that include video in it.
Do I think that it's worth a shot? Well, in my opinion yes, some companies have sold billions of dollars worth of their products from infomercials, so yes, I think they are quite effective is an internet marketer can do a sales letter that uses some elements of an infomercial. Some of these companies you may be familiar with or possibly purchased from yourself which includes Bow Flex, Proactive, and the George Forman grill.
On the contrary, earlier I mentioned that the number one medium that advertisers spend their money on is television, and that's easy to see why. Television has a lot of viewers, and anywhere that has lots of viewers will also have lots of coverage.
Also, it is very easy to hold an individual's attention. Would you rather read a long dull story, or would you rather watch it on television and have a combination of the elements of audio, and vision? Probably the second option. However, it does have its disadvantages and that is that it's extremely expensive.
Only the "big time" companies can afford such advertising on television. Also, the exposure is very short lived. Last, there are constant ways to try and skip around commercials, so that why I believe that advertisers will start turning to internet advertising as their number one medium to market on within the future. The rate it's growing at is extremely fast, and according to my research no other form of medium has grown as rapidly.
As more and more people come online within the future, more and more advertising will be done on it. When internet marketers complain about the amount of money that they spend on internet advertising, they should try comparing that money spent to running one small ad in their local newspaper, in which a marketer can't even target who gets the newspaper, or even guarantee who reads the ad for that matter.
