Ever Wanted to Create Your Own Business on the Internet?

A profitable business could be anything from selling used books on eBay to owning eBay itself. In this article, I hope to show the reader that starting their own money making business venture is far easier than less expensive than many people believe it to be. Furthermore, you do not have to be a 'guru' at marketing or anything else to become successful, but there are some skills that you will have to learn along the way.

All you need is a passion for something and the willingness to put some hard work into your business to help it succeed. A little imagination is a plus, too.

First things first. Take out a piece of paper, and jot down a list of things that you enjoy doing and are good at. Do you enjoy gardening? Are you an avid reader? Are you a golfer? Heck, it could be anything. Now look at the list the you just made. Try to think "Which one of these things would I be best at?" or "Which would I enjoy the most?". Once you've got it narrowed down to two or three ideas, think "Which one of these would other people be most interested in?". For my example, let's say you chose to sell old books that were lying around your house.

Now, think how are you going to sell these to people? Is it going to be a simple eBay / Amazon operation, or are you willing to spend a little more time and money to open your own online store. The online store option might be a little more risky, but the potential money to be made could also be much more. It's your choice. If your a true beginner in field of internet sales, than perhaps the simple eBay option might be better for you. On the other hand, if you feel like trying to start your own online store, just remember that this may be a little more expensive & time consuming.

Next, you have to do a little research to find out what the market's like. What are the goods your trying to sell going for on the internet? The price of goods on the internet tends to be much lower than their offline counter-parts. Look at what other people are selling their goods at. This will give you an idea of what you could expect to earn selling that type of product. Another thing to look at is whether the market is already saturated with that type of product. If it is, then there will be a lot of other people competing with you, and making money may be hard. If there is a lack of that type of product, than your in luck, because buyers will be willing to pay more for it.

For the eBay seller, this might only mean looking around the auction listings a bit, while if you chose to open your own online shop, then you'll have to find & analyze your competitors: to do this, try going to Google.com and searching for "Buy PRODUCT online".

Once you've done this, then you can start selling your products. Open a paypal account to accept payments from customers, since this is the main way of transferring money over the internet (www.Paypal.com). If your getting lots of sales, good for you. If not, try to find out why. Are your competitors selling the same goods for a lower price? Are people just not interested in your offers because you haven't used the right wording / pictures in your descriptions of your products? Or is there just not any demand for the product that your selling? There will be many problems that you will face though your business venture, you should always try and find inventive ways around them when you can (this is where imagination comes in handy).

The next step is to expand your business. You can do this in two ways: expanding your share in the market you are already in, or getting into a bigger market. OK, try to think of the market your in (the gardening equipment market, the book market...) as a cake: You have a small slice of the cake, but you want more. So, you can either make your slice of the cake bigger, or get a slice from a bigger cake. So, if you want to expand your business, you can either expand in the market that your already in (if you sell books, you would try to sell more books by beating your competitors) or expand into a new market (so you could try to sell books AND magazines).

This was the first article of how to make money online. I tried to keep things simple for people who are new to ecommerce, or even business in general. The next article I write on the topic will be a little more in depth & complex, but should still be very understandable. Feel free to post your ideas / comments, or email me if you have any questions.
