You'll be amazed at how well companies pay to answering services. Your apartment complex might have an answering service too. Go ahead and ask your apartment complex. As I said before, you will be amazed. So why not start your own. And the best part of such businesses is that you get to work from the comfort of your own home.
Other than that comfort, the answering service business also allows you the flexibility of choosing your own hours and tasks. You get to decide which clients you want and when you want to work. Maybe you want to work all day and night for a client? Or maybe you can settle for just the lunch hour? Some of your clients will simply need an amiable and professional tone greeting callers, while others will want you to work as though you were in their real business office. But you can leave those behind and start just with the facility of taking messages. After you get the hang of it, you can move on to taking orders by phone, setting appointments or taking surveys.
You might have to setup separate lines for your different clients, and be sure to label them properly. Ask your phone company about the limit on the maximum lines you may have. You may also consider renting a switchboard if you can get more than 10 lines. Before you get to this point, careful planning is a must, because you have to keep in mind that these are expensive and moving will simply raise your expenses. With switchboards you will be operating on over 100 lines in no time; you will need privacy, so you can also get a security switch. And if you are worrying about whether you will be able to use a switchboard then don't worry. Most phone companies will train you first.
Other accessories you need are lots of pens and message pads for the obvious reasons, a rack for storing messages and a time clock to write down the exact time the call came. Another suggestion would be to get liability insurance because of the nature of this work.
If you want to advertise properly, make sure to get your name down in the yellow pages and of course keep spreading the word by mouth. Initially you might have to visit the clients in person, which should build a good impression. Also, offering free trial period of, say, three months, may be a good idea to get things rolling. If you clearly explain the quality of your answering service to would-be clients, you'll soon be having enough work.
So what are you waiting for? If you have answered yes to the first three questions in this article, and you want to deal with professionals from home, then this just might be the right work for you.
