Make Money with Scrabble Tournament Ideas

Jennifer Eblin
Scrabble is one of the most popular board games and dozens of tournaments are held around the world every year. Each tournament has its own type of rules and regulations, with different versions played in the United States, Europe and other regions. Even if you don't have access to the official tournament rules, you still have different options available. Host a Scrabble tournament as a charity event or even hold a large-scale event during a community festival or fair, to bring more people into the event.

Double Elimination

A double elimination event lets every player lose one round and still continue in the game. If they draw poor tiles in one game or have problems concentrating, they still have the chance to bounce back, without losing their position. Divide the players into groups of two and pit each player against each other in one game. Record the first loss of each player and play through once. Play through a second time and eliminate any player who loses a second time. Keep dividing the players into random groups of two and eliminating all players who lost two games. Eventually you'll have only two players remaining and the winner of that last game, is the winner of the Scrabble tournament.

Round Robin

A Round Robin tournament lets every player play against each other once. Start by arranging the players into groups of two and record their score based on a single game. Have everyone on one side of the table move to their right and play another game. Record those scores, adding them onto their original score. Keep the players moving and recording the scores until everyone has played everyone else. The person with the highest score at the end of the event is the winner.

Pre-Tournament Pairings

Create a pre-tournament to determine who plays in the final games. This takes the form of a single elimination, meaning that if a person loses one game, they lose their spot in the tournament. Assign each person a number and randomly draw numbers, to determine who plays against who. Play one round the day before the tournament, which narrows down the playing field for the tournament. Host additional rounds if needed, to get the playing field even smaller. During the tournament, pit players of four against each other, letting only the person with the highest score continue. The two players left standing, play against each other in the final role.
