Make Money With Your Website

Sean Rooney
How would you like to make money every month by monetizing your website? Thousands of people do it, so why not you? Thanks to Google Adsense, it is easy to make a little bit of extra money every month by displaying context sensitive ads on your website. All you have to do is sign up for an account and put a few lines of javascript code into the html of your websites.

To begin, realize that it is usually best to wait until you have a fair amount of traffic before you even think about putting ads on your website. You have to earn $100 through Adsense before Google will pay you, so make sure it is not going to take you six months to earn $100. It would be better to focus on generating traffic and promoting your website than it would be to make a couple of dollars a week.

It is difficult to say how much traffic you will need to make monetization worth it, because it also depends on how you optimize your ads, what kind of categories the ads are in, and your click through rate. More on that in a minute. For now, consider $2 per thousand page impressions as the lowest rate you can expect to earn. If you get five thousand page impressions on your website per day, you might earn $300 a month with Adsense. If, on the other hand, you only get a hundred page impressions per day, you can only expect to make $6. That probably is not worth the hassle.

As previously mentioned, your earnings per thousand page view will vary on a variety of factors. Since Google considers Adsense a proprietary program, they do not reveal exactly how it is calculated. We do know, however, that its biggest factor is click through rate. Although some of Google's advertisers are willing to pay a little bit per impression, they pay a lot more for clicks than they do impressions. Whereas you might earn a fraction of a cent for several page views, you might make 50 or 40 cents for one click. Obviously, you want to generate as many clicks as possible.

Google has a guide that will help you do this, but one of the most important things you can do is consider what types of ads you want to use and where you want to put them. Google allows you to choose from a variety of ad banners and text links in all different size. Which ones you use and where you place them can make a great deal of difference in you click-through rate. Generally speaking, ads at the top and left side of the page do better than ads to the right of the page. Ads near navigation links and ads that are designed to match the rest of the site generally do better too.

Do not under any circumstances attempt to defraud Google by clicking on your own ads or asking your friends and family to click on your ads for you. You may get away with it for a while, but you will probably get caught sooner or later and you will forfeit all of the earnings you have accumulated in your account, even if they were made legitimately. Because people defraud advertisers of millions of dollars every year through "click fraud," Google has developed very sophisticated, proprietary software to catch all types of fraud. We do not know exactly how it works, but just type in "banned from Adsense" and you will see countless forums and message boards full of people who have been banned from Adsense for one reason or another. Although there are other advertising programs you could go with, Adsense seems to be the best, so being banned from Google can be a serious blow to any websites monetization program.
