Make More Money with Antiques and Collectibles

Increasing the Amount of Profitable Merchandise in Your Store or Shows

Increasing the amount of enticing vintage items for sale at your antiques shop or at collectibles shows you attend can result in larger profits. Here are some simple ways to add to your offerings and make more money.

SELL CONSIGNMENT ANTIQUES AND COLLECTIBLES
It is easy to increase the amount of merchandise you have for sale by taking in consignments. This can be done occasionally in a store at busy selling times such as holidays or during sales. Or it can be a year-round activity to add to sales and assure a flow of "just-in" antiques and collectibles. At shows, you can sell a few extra items on consignment for friends or increase your stock significantly by adding as many consignment items as you can handle.

SELL RELATED AS WELL AS SPECIALIZED ANTIQUES AND COLLECTIBLES
If you are a specialist dealer, selling primarily one type of antique, you can increase your stock by adding relevant items to your specialty. For example, dealers of antique quilts might add vintage fabric scraps, antique sewing scissors, and old patterns to their stock, items of probable interest to quilt collectors. Or dealers specializing in miniature metal cars might expand their stock by adding other transportation toys - small busses, trains, and trucks.

OFFER BOTH LARGE AND SMALL ANTIQUES AND COLLECTIBLES
Another way to increase profits is by offering some vintage items of a different size than you usually carry. If you normally sell "smalls", for instance, try adding a few large antiques that fit in well with your stock or that stand out by being completely different than it. A bit of variety should keep interest up with shoppers, and increase sales. Or if you deal in big collectibles - antique furniture, architectural salvage, large rugs, linens etc., try mixing in some small and unique vintage collectibles for sale.

SELL REPRODUCTIONS ALONG WITH ANTIQUES
You can make more money with your antiques and collectibles by selling reproduction items along with your authentic antiques. Many people simply want a vintage look and do not care if an item is really old or simply looks like it. By clearly marking these objects as "reproduction" or "new vintage look", you will keep purist collectors happy along with those customers without a preference. All kinds of unique and attractive reproduction items are available at wholesale prices to dealers, from antique looking lace and linens, dinnerware, toys, to art prints and much more.

Great tips! I enjoy dealing in collectibles, although I still have a lot to learn.
