Trade-in vs. Private Sale

Thousands more dollars can be made in the sale of one's used car if a person simply chooses to sell the vehicle herself rather than trading it in to the dealership. Sometimes the dealership will make it look like they are giving you a decent amount for your trade-in. In reality, the dealership is recouping that amount by selling the new car for more money.

Don't Know How to Sell the Car Yourself?

Determine the fair market private sale price of your vehicle. There are three major companies that put out price guides in print on a regular basis. Each has a website where the fair market value of your vehicle can be determined without buying their book. Check out Edmunds HTTP://WWW.EDMUNDS.COM/ , NADA HTTP://WWW.NADA.COM/ , and Kelley Blue Book HTTP://WWW.KBB.COM/ . Some of these sites even allow you to print out a window sticker for your car showing that you derived the price in a fair way.

Clean up your car yourself or have it detailed the next time you have the oil changed. Take some snazzy photos of the car to put in your ads and flyers.

Advertise, advertise, advertise. Put an ad in your local newspaper, advertise online with one or more of the established auto listing companies such as Auto Trader HTTP://WWW.AUTOTRADER.COM/ , and put up flyers advertising your car for sale. You may also be able to park the car in a high traffic area with a for sale sign in the window. For example, if you go to the mall for a few hours, park the car close to the street entrance to the mall so that other mall-goers will see your vehicle for sale. Check with mall personnel to be sure this is an acceptable practice.

A Brief History of my Qualifications

After earning a BA in psychology (1998) and a JD in law (2001), I took and passed the Washington State Bar Examination. In 2002, I established a private law practice in Seattle, Washington. I strove to provide affordable legal services to a diverse community while also performing all administrative law firm duties. Interviewing and counseling clients in addition to managing ongoing cases was a major component of my law practice. This is a useful article for me because I have to sell my truck. I also agree that trading it in is not the best solution.
