Make the Most of Advertising

Mark Mielke
Owning your own business is becoming a very popular trend among many people of all generations today. Almost thirty percent of our population does some kind of self employed work in their lives. A major issue with succeeding in that field is knowing how to advertise properly. Many new businesses fail because their owners do not know how to properly advertise. Their are three major fields of advertising today that most people need to embrace. They are; online advertising, printed advertising, and media advertising.

Online advertising is the easiest and usually the cheapest form of advertising. Obviously, it takes place over the internet. You can buy ad space on large social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, and YouTube. You can use keyword advertising to drive traffic to your business' website and therefore attract potential customers. E-mail can also be a great advertising tool, but be careful not to spam people. Remember, everything in moderation.

Printed advertising is the most traditional form of advertising. Usually you put ads in newspapers and magazines. Most tabloid magazines get a large portion of their profits from selling ad space, so you are likely to find an opening there. Newspapers dedicate entire sections of their being to advertising. You can also print flyers and business cards to promote yourself. Note that this method is losing popularity due to the emergence of television and the internet.

Before online advertising came around, advertising with the media was all the rage for companies. It is still widely used today. Every television station out there gets an enormous amount of their profits from commercial advertising. You can have any one of hundreds of stations broadcast your advertisements. Keep in mind that time of the year will affect the price of that advertising. A commercial during the superbowl will cost more than a commercial during a tennis tournament.

I personally go with online advertising to spread word about my work. It may not yield that many results, but each hit is worth the effort. So you have online advertising, which is the easiest and cheapest. You have printed advertising, which is most likely to yield the most serious customers, and you have media advertising, which will yield the largest amount of potential customers. Each one has it's own advantages and disadvantages. What it comes down to is finding out which one best suits the capabilities of your business.
