During a time period when I temporarily lived in an apartment, I opted to give the children the master bedroom so they could have space to play. This left a very small bedroom to be used as the master bedroom. The only saving grace is that it had two closets. These tips will help you to make the most of a small master bedroom.
Get a smaller bed. In a small bedroom, you will want the smallest bed size that you can stand. My tiny bedroom had a full sized bed, which worked fine, especially since my husband traveled a lot. You can get a queen bed for two people if you like, but don't try to squeeze a king-sized bed into a tiny room.
Use modern small scaled furnishings that take up less space. You won't have room for heavy, ornate furniture pieces. Instead, opt for low profile furniture like futons and things you might find at Ikea.
Place the side of the bed as close to the wall as possible. For a single person, you can place the bed against the wall. For a couple, put the nightstand against the wall, and the bed right next to it. This will give just enough room to walk around the bed.
Eliminate extra items in the room. Have a little drawer space as you an stand. If possible, put a low dresser in the closet to save space in the room. Forget having a lounging area in the room. A small bench is probably as much seating as a small bedroom needs. Consider mounting a shelf on the wall to use as a night stand. This will clear up floor space.
Use your vertical space. Use tall bookshelves and dresser chests to store items in your small bedroom. Don't forget the space under your bed too. In fact, consider raising your bed a bit to fit drawer units underneath it. Mount the TV, if you need one, on the wall, or place it on a tall dresser. Make sure the dresser is secure so that a child can't tip it over.
Be creative with hidden storage. I once saw side tables made from metal garbage cans and topped with wooden table tops and table cloths. They kept off season clothing in the garbage cans. If you need a desk in your room, get a unit that folds down from the wall. Make sure your bench or any seating has storage space in it.
