Make the Most Out of Valentine's Day Without a Valentine

Kari Kay
Ahh... Valentine's Day. The day that brings excitement, stress, and disappointment. Women are excited to see what their men are going to do for them, men stress about meeting their woman's expectations or taking the next step, and well, many people are just plain disappointed. Disappointed with their dates, disappointed that their dates forgot about the big day, or disappointed that they don't have a date. I can't help what your date or doesn't do, but I would like to give you a few suggestions about how not to be disappointed by not having a date.

Celebrate Singles Awareness Day
Being single isn't a bad thing; embrace it.
Guys: invite the guys over for a game of poker or video games. Bring out the beer and pretzels and do whatever it is that guys do together. Make a party of it.
Ladies: get the girls together with some classic chick flicks and wine. I have friends that even go as far as watching the movies in their bras and underwear. There are no guys there, so be yourself and enjoy the company.

Take Advantage of Valentine's Specials
Many restaurants offer special dinners and some even hand out roses to every woman that comes in that day.
Guys: This is a great opportunity to treat your sister, mom, or grandma and make them feel really special.
Ladies: Get a group of single chicas together and go out for dinner. You'll still get the awesome specials AND a flower! Who needs a date?!?

Go to the Movies
Valentine's Day is a movie that will be released on February 12, 2010. It has an all-star lineup with stars such as Jessica Alba, Kathy Bates, Jessica Biel, Patrick Dempsey, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Topher Grace, Anne Hathaway, Queen Latifah, George Lopez, Julia Roberts, and Taylor Swift just to name a few. Bring a friend or go by yourself. Yes, I said go by yourself. It sounds odd, but you won't notice once the movie starts. My best experiences at the movies have actually been when I was alone. You won't be distracted by people next to you and you can fully immerse yourself in the big screen.

Give Valentines to Friends
Giving gifts really makes Valentine's Day special no matter who you give them to. I have made special gifts for friends and roommates and it was really fun. You don't have to be in love with somebody to love them. Thank them for being an awesome friend and tell them just how special they are to you.

Do Something Special for Yourself
Valentine's Day can be spent loving yourself and splurging a little. Send yourself some flowers or go get those heart-print boxers. Order in Chinese food or listen to your favorite CD. Do something to put a smile on your face and appreciate who you are.

Visit a Dating Website
Spend a little time on a dating website--not to find a partner, but to remind yourself why you are single. There are a lot of... odd... people out there and it feels good to know that you haven't settled for just anybody. If you do want to eventually find your soul mate take the time to think about what you want and don't want in your other half. If you aren't looking for somebody just browse people's profiles just to get a good chuckle.

Attend a Singles Event
Many companies host events for singles around Valentine's Day. Take a friend or go by yourself. These types of events are designed to get people to meet each other without a lot of stress, so don't worry about it. It comes naturally in this environment. Make Valentine's Day special in your own way. Whether you spend it with friends, family, or alone, there are many opportunites to make it an awesome day.
