Make the Most Romantic Candle in the World

Anni Sofferet
You don't have to melt wax to make the most romantic candle in the world. In fact, the candles play the least important role. It's all about the magical drawing of two heads intertwined, called "Bond of Union", by M. C. Escher.

I found it in an old calendar and immediately knew I could make the most romantic candle in the world out of it. I would cut out the heads from the background, then paste them on a glass vase with candles burning inside. What could be more passionate than a homemade romantic candle with flames burning through the faces of the two lovers?

Candle making was never so easy or original! You can make this romantic candle for a special dinner celebration or for valentine's day. The theme of the drawing in which the faces of the woman and man look like apple peals that blend together-is a perfect theme for the most romantic candle in the world. Intrigued? Let's get started.

Where to Find the Romantic Candle Image?

To make the most romantic candle in the world you have to use the same image I used; otherwise it just won't be the same. "Bond of Union" by M. C. Escher can be found in calendar stores. I used last year's calendar. You can also visit the Escher Gallery and print out "Bond of Union", but be sure to enlarge the image if you wish to make the most romantic candle in the world stand out.

How to Cut Out the Romantic Candle Image?

You'll need a sharp utility knife and a flat surface that you don't mind scratching. It took me 20 minutes to cut out the romantic candle image. I worked slowly to avoid making mistakes. Really, the key to making the most romantic candle in the world is to treat it like a labor of love. Don't rush it, and you'll be able to separate the twirling heads from the black background. I only kept the bubbles that overlapped over the romantic image, but you can choose to keep more of them.

Make the Most Romantic Candle in the World

In a large glass vase, place a tall candle surrounded by shorter ones. I chose white candles, but you can choose red ones to make a romantic candle with pillars of passion inside. I rolled a little tape inside out to make sticky loops, then I adhered the romantic candle image to the front of the vase.

When making the most romantic candle in the world, be sure to use a wide vase that will allow the two images to be seen in a single glance. If you wrap the romantic candle image around a narrow vase the man and woman will be severed visually-hardly a romantic candle theme.

I hope this homemade romantic candle inspires your evening. For more of my favorite crafts, I invite you to visit my 50 Charming Craft Projects.

I always thought that "Bond of Union" was a bit on the creepy side... but for me, that makes it even more romantic. :)
