Make a Mother's Day Time Capsule

A Gift that Will Bring a Smile to Her Face and Tears to Her Eyes

Lindsay Maddox
It's Mother's Day again, so what do you get that wonderful woman you call "Mom?" Or, how about the wonderful woman your kids call "Mom?" In the past, you have given her flowers, spent enough money on cards to fund a small nation, and taken her out to brunch more times than you can count. This year, do something different, something that will really make this Mother's Day meaningful. My suggestion is a Mother's Day Time Capsule. It will bring a smile to her face and tears to her eyes, and become something that she will enjoy over and over again.

The traditional time capsule is assembled and then buried in the ground until a date in the future. In this day and age, when we move from place to place every few years, this isn't as feasible, so you can put a creative spin on it. And anyway, wouldn't it be nice for Mom to be able to look at her time capsule treasures whenever she pleases, instead of burying them deep in the ground?

Step 1: The Container

If you do chose to make a capsule to bury, you will need to find a waterproof container. There are companies that sell containers specifically for time capsules, but they can cost upwards of $400.There are also weatherproof containers that are much more affordable.

However, if you decide to put together a time capsule that won't go in the ground, you can do anything from wrapping a shoebox and it's top separately in pretty wrapping paper, to finding a nice container at the store. It just depends on how much you want to spend!

Step 2: The Memories

These are only a few ideas of items to place in your time capsule, but the possibilities are endless depending on your imagination and creativity.

For your Child's Mom

Some ideas for items to put into a time capsule for the mother of your child are:

Hospital photo of your child at birth
Special paintings/drawings done by your child for Mom
Letter from you describing why she is such a great Mom
Her favorite flower pressed and dried
Child's hand/footprints in clay or on paper
Pictures of child
Poem to her
DVD slideshow of pictures
CD of her favorite songs

For your Mom

Favorite picture of the two of you (current and you as a child)
Letter from you telling her your favorite childhood memories
Her favorite flower pressed and dried
Pictures of her with her grandchildren (if applicable)
Poem to her
DVD slideshow of pictures
CD of her favorite songs

Step 3: Give her another wonderful memory

This is the easiest part! Stick all of the items in the box and give it to her. Be sure to have tissues handy, and enjoy watching her reaction as you make another wonderful memory together. She will probably never forget it.
