You will certainly thank yourself when the time comes to move. You won't have to buy moving boxes or have to ask for the extra boxes that local stores may have. This is an added expense that you can avoid by preparing ahead of time for a move, if you anticipate a move or not. When you get packages, you should also keep the packing material such as peanuts or rolled up paper. Place them in a garbage bag to add to over time. This is just another item you will not have to buy it when you move. Keeping large boxes and its packing materials are also great for shipping items to family and friends for birthdays and holidays.
There will be certain boxes that you will have to purchase if you are making a long distance move. U-Haul sells all types of boxes for your moving needs from hanging rack boxes for your suits and formal wear to boxes for delicate mirrors. Make sure you keep these boxes for future moves as they can be pretty expensive.
Start packing your belongings a couple months before the big move. That way you can throw things out that you no longer want and you avoid taking up precious room in your boxes. You will also reduce the amount of stress associated with a move if you begin early. It allows you to take note of things that you may need for your next home and to make a checklist of the things you have left to do.
Contact your utility companies to close your accounts on your move out date and inquire about how any deposits are credited back to you. You should also contact the utility company for your new home to turn on service at that location. Make sure to submit a change of address form with your post office and you should acquire a new voting registration form for your new address. Supply your landlord with your forwarding address to receive your security deposit.
If you are going to rent a moving truck and are going to have a long distance move, think about purchasing their insurance policy for broken items. It's great to have peace of mind during a stressful time.
