Make Ourselves a Christmas Gift for Christmas a Poem for Christmas

Sheri Fresonke Harper
When I reach for the glitter and foil and golden precious star,
just out of reach, pushing myself further and further...

When I follow the trail of the unknown word, questioning
finding it ringing in my ears like an angel's carillon...

When I find tears in my eyes for the unfair, unreasoning wrong
walking down my street and offer up beans or rice...

When I take up the sewing kit, patch up the hole, refinish
the old and make it new and shine and smell so fresh...

When I crumble soil in my hands and dig in, dig down
and settle that fragile little beauty of plant....

When just for the bells of it I hum and sing along
and let my voice soar up, higher and higher

When I find the dark night, wrapped around my soul
and seek the reassurance of loved one's hand...

And repeat the words revealed on the wind like a chant
like the precious Solomon or heart song of lullabye...

When I do one, or two, or three or more of these,
making myself, step by step perfecting each day
finding the ideal, finding awe that silences me,
I make myself a Christmas present gladdened by Christmas day.

Just lovely. I came over here looking for poems to include in the next Call for Content article I am working on, and was not surprised at all to find one of the most beautiful.
