Make Your Own BioDiesel

Isaac Parrish
Gas prices are sky-rocketed. Diesel is at a premium right now. Is there any way to get fuel for low cost now days? There's only one way that I know, and it's "green" too!

Make your own "BioDiesel."

It's a simple mix, and there's numerous recipe's online for it. The basic ingredients are:

Cooking Oil
Methanol
Sodium Hydroxide (Lye)

If you have those three right now, you can make your own biodiesel too. Just follow the directions and you'll be on your way.

To get the directions, you'll have to do your own research. What I've found is that if you search for "BioDiesel Recipe" on Google, you'll find numerous recipes. Once you've found the one you're happy with, it's time to start.

Some of the recipe's say you can make it with a simple blender. I'm sure this would be the last time you used the blender for anything other than biodiesel, so make sure you're not attached to it in any way.

Also recommended is a well ventilated room, or out of doors area. The Chemicals used in making biodiesel can be hazardous to your health. A breath mask is recommended.

Remember to wear rubber or plastic gloves. Sodium Hydroxide should not ever come in contact with skin, or eyes. If it does, you should stop what you're doing that instant, and wash the affected area immediately.

The process for making the biodiesel is a bit complicated, and requires step-by-step instructions which this article cannot hold. Go ahead and try out the recipe's out there. You could be saving yourself a lot of money, as well as saving the environment.

Very cool, I build biodiesel processors which turn waste vegetable oil into biodiesel. It is really amazing how simple the process is, as well as saving the customer $2-3 per gallon at the pumps. Algae biodiesel looks even more promising. As the other poster said, we just need to keep moving in the right direction.
