First, make some cinnamon applesauce cookie dough. For this recipe, you will need:
½ cup cinnamon
½ cup all-purpose flour
½ tsp. salt
1 cup applesauce
This will make about 16 scented decorations. Remember, you shouldn't eat these decorations but they smell so good, you will want to.
Also, you will need measuring cups and spoons, a large mixing bowl, and a wooden spoon.
In a mixing bowl, mix together the cinnamon, flour and salt. Add the applesauce and blend together well.
You will need a few utensils. These include waxed paper, a rolling pin, star-shaped cookie cutter, drinking straw, baking sheet lined with aluminum foil, lifter, cooling rack, and ribbon or twine.
Preheat your oven to 225 degrees. Place the dough on a large piece of waxed paper. Pat the dough flat with your hands until it is about ½ inch thick. Now use a rolling pin to roll out the dough until it ¼ inch thick. Use the cookie cutter to cut out dough stars. With the straw, make a hole at the top of each star.
Transfer the stars to the baking sheet and bake for 2 hours. Remove the stars from the oven and let them cool for 2 minutes. Use the lifter to transfer the stars to the cooling rack. Let the stars cool completely.
When the stars are cool, thread a piece of decorative ribbon or twine in festive colors, (red or green) through the hole and tie the ends together to form a loop for hanging on the tree.
You can also make these without using your oven if you like. Do this by placing the stars on a drying or cooling rack and leaving them for two days. You can use a baking sheet or any flat surface also if you don't have rack. Be sure to turn the stars at least twice a day. This will make your tree decorations lighter than if they were baked.
You can use other cookie cutter shapes like snowmen and tree shapes as well for your tree. Use your imagination. Use the straw to punch holes in the cookies for other designs. Maybe put holes where ornaments would go on the Christmas tree cookie cutter or as eyes, nose, and buttons for the snowman. Put decorative cinnamon melts in those places. The options are endless.
Let your children hang the decorations on the tree and enjoy the scents of the season.
