Make Your Own Cornice or Swag Window Treatments

Teresa (Tracey) Stanisha
Making a swag or cornice of your own can be very simple. You simply need to find a sturdy, but lightweight fabric that you like. Make sure the color will go well in the room that you are covering the window in. Have a good idea of what you are planning to make the room look like before you begin. You might even want to do a sketch of the window treatments before you start. When you decide on the fabric you will need to get an idea of how you will fit it to the wall. The easiest way to do this is to cut it in two equal sections. Then you will need to put a nail at the top of the outside of the window on each side. Put another nail in the middle part of the window above it.

You should then hang the fabric over the nails and gather them in the center. You can add flowers to the fabric to make it look prettier. You can trim the ends with scissors. Be sure that you make each side look the same. You can create a lot of different looks depending on what you want. Add gemstones to the fabric to dress it up. If you like glitter this is also an option when you are making your own unique window covering.

This idea will work for different holidays, too. So, if you are the type of person that likes to decorate for the different holidays consider making a different colored window covering for each holiday. It is quite simple and looks fantastic. For instance for the Christmas holiday use red or green fabric. You can also use gold or silver. For Valentine's Day of course you could use red. During the St. Patrick's Day time use green and when Easter comes around use pink to really spruce up the room. There are all kinds of ideas that you can do when you make your own window covering. Tassels are also a great addition to the final piece. If you want to make a really unusual treatment for your window you can add fringes to it. This will make it look very antique. There are so many beautiful things you can do with fringes, so consider them when you are making your own window treatments.

Making your own window coverings is fun and easy. Try it and see what kind of creation that you can come up with. If you prefer to use a pattern you can make your own or buy one from the local sewing store. You can also use fabric glue instead of a sewing machine or needle and thread. Anything goes when you are making your own window treatments, so do what is easiest for you.
