Make Your Own Deodorant

Easy Antiperspirant Recipe

Emma Salk
Seems like as soon as you get used to using a particular product there is suddenly, and without warning, a new issue. Either they stop making a product you like or you find out that a product you use often has been discovered to contain a harmful ingredient. It's always something, isn't it? Now, there are red flags being raised about deodorant and antiperspirant. Most contain aluminum which is a neurotoxin. Aluminum has now been linked to everything from Alzheimer's to respiratory illnesses to renal problems.

No more aluminum for you! Eject yet some more chemicals out of your life by making your own deodorant. There is more than one recipe to be had when you search online and the new types work great. The only thing better than the performance of homemade deodorants is the fact that you save so much money!

It's easy to make a powder-type deodorant that works for men as well as women. There's no mess involved with making it really, since there are only two ingredients. Mix one part baking soda with six parts cornstarch. Place these dry ingredients in a container with a lid that snaps in place. Shake the ingredients well. The cornstarch absorbs moisture and the baking soda eliminates odor.

The powdered deodorant can be mixed in one container and placed in something prettier, if you want. You can mix up a large batch then simply put some of it, when needed, into a smaller container. Apply the deodorant as you would any powder. Use a powder puff, makeup applicator, cotton ball or similar item to apply the antiperspirant when needed. Do not apply the deodorant if your underarms are damp or it will clump. For most people, the deodorant works for at least 24 hours.

Many commercial deodorants can ruin some clothing but the powdered deodorant doesn't. The simple powder mixture is easy to wash or dry clean out of any outfit but rarely can you see much powder residue. If you are worried about using the deodorant with an expensive garment dress guards are always an option for protecting your clothing.

Aluminum is only one of the dangerous ingredients in deodorant. Parabens in many deodorants have been linked to breast cancer. Why take a chance on exposing yourself to toxins when it's so easy to replace your old deodorant with the new powder type? It's much healthier, costs a whole lot less, and takes only minutes to make!
