Make Your Own Halloween Decorations on a Budget

V. L. Hamlin
Everyone loves Halloween, from the scary spiders to the adorable pumpkins, this is the time of year where you will be "spooked" every time you turn a corner. But the commercialization of Halloween has made it just as expensive to decorate your home as Christmas. How can you decorate for the trick or treaters without it costing you hundreds of dollars?

It's easy to do! I would bet you have most of the items at home already, so the cost will be minimal! The items you don't already have are easily purchased at the dollar store or your local discount retailer. So, let's get started!

Spooky Garland

Remember Kindergarten and cutting strips of red and green paper to make Christmas garland? Well, it is so easy to do the same for Halloween! Just cut strips of orange and black instead of red and green paper and tape them together to create the same garland! Hang it around the inside of your door or along the beams in your ceiling. Then go to the dollar store and buy those little spider rings and skull necklaces and hang them from the garland using fishing line. Every time someone walks past them, they will think the spiders and skulls are floating in the air!

Spider Webs

These are easy! Buy a bag of quilt batting and some plastic spiders from the dollar store. Stretch and tear the quilt batting then hang it around your light fixtures, in the corners of each room, from ceiling fans and photo frames. Then stick the spiders throughout the "webs"

Broken Bones

Place a whole bunch of those big shells shaped macaroni (uncooked) under your welcome mat outside. Every time someone steps onto the mat, the shells will crack like broken bones!

Tombstones

Cut out tombstone shapes from a large piece of cardboard, paint them grey and write funny sayings on them in black marker. Search the internet and you will find thousands of tombstone sayings for Halloween!

Decorating for Halloween can be a lot of fun and it doesn't have to cost you hundreds of dollars to make your house look haunted! Follow the tips above and take time to search for more! When people started celebrating Halloween as we know it now, they didn't have automatically inflatable witches, they improvised and though of new decorations on their own. If you do the same, you will find you have the best decorated house on the block, every year!

Tree Figures: tie small twigs or branches together with twine or string to look like a human form.

Bats: Get some yarn , an empty egg carton , black paint , a paintbrush , white paint ,a black marker , and scisors. Cut the egg carton in half so you just have the bumpy side where you keep the eggs. Cut out three bumps for each bat. Paint the bat black. Now with white paint and the black marker make some funny expressions.
