Make Your Own Luke Skywalker Halloween Costume
How to Make Your Own Costume of Star Wars' Original Jedi
ITEMS NEEDED
*White tunic, karate gi, or medical scrubs
*Lightsaber
*Black or beige boots
*Four inch Ace bandages
*Black utility belt
*A little bit of the Force
In the original Star Wars, Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker wore a very simple yet iconic outfit that can be easily replicated with items off of the rack at your local retail or second hand store. The outfit is also similar to the traditional "Jedi" look worn by characters like Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequels, so you can easily modify your costume to those characters if you look more like Liam Neeson or Ewan McGregor.
Luke Skywalker wore a white cotton tunic, which by itself may not be easy to find. If you cannot find one, consider using a white karate gi, or the traditional karate uniform. The white top of the karate gi is a pretty close replica of both Luke Skywalker and Jedi tops, and can be found at any local martial arts supply store. They can also be found at many thrift and second-hand stores.
Beige medical scrub pants will work well for Luke's tan pants. If you can find light tan or beige sweat pants, they will work as well. If you prefer a "Jedi" look, use dark brown pants.
Luke wore high tan boots that were simply styled and not easily found in stores. You can buy expensive replicas made by costume companies (www.MotorCowboy.com offers a pair for $399) or make your own. Using generic beige or brown work boots, tuck your pants in the boots and wrap four inch Ace bandage rolls from ankle to knee over the boots to give it a more authentic look. For a "Jedi" look, use dark brown or black boots without the bandages.
For the belt, look into standard utility belts for construction workers or electrician belts available in local tool stores. You can also look into belts available at military surplus stores with pockets and holsters.
The lightsaber is an important touch to any Star Wars Halloween costume. Hasbro makes toy lightsabers ($20 at most retailers) that work very well, and even make lightsaber sounds. Master Replicas makes an "FX Saber" ($120 at many retailers and comic book shops) that is a high-quality light-up florescent tube attached to a lightsaber hilt. They are made in several different colors and are as close to a real lightsaber as you can get. Both Hasbro and Master Replicas make lightsabers for Luke Skywalker (blue), Qui Gon Jinn (green), Obi Wan Kenobi (blue), Mace Windu (purple), and even Darth Vader (red) if you decide to be an "evil" Sith Jedi.
For an added touch to your Halloween costume, you could look into finding a replica of Luke's electro binoculars that he used in the film. Hasbro made a photo slide viewer that looked like the electro binoculars in the late 90's, and they may be found on an online auction site or an online retailer, just search for "Star Wars Slide Viewer." A toy of Luke's binoculars that opens up into a mini-playset was made as well, and can be found. You may also search online auction sites for "Star Wars macrobinoculars" or "Star Wars electrobinoculars" for usable items.
If you have a pet, consider a Star Wars costume for them to give your Luke or Jedi a sidekick! Pet costumes of Princess Leia (white gown and slave girl outfits), Yoda, and even Darth Vader are available in stores like Target or online Halloween retailers. Showing up at a party as Luke Skywalker with "Darth Fido" in tow will make you the hit of the Halloween party.
