Make Your Own Post it Notes in Only Two Simple Steps!

V. L. Hamlin
Everyone loves Post It Notes. They are so handy to have, just large enough to jot down what you need to remember and small enough to stick just about anywhere! But they are so expensive!

Don't waste your money, make your own! It's really easy to do and you can do it with leftover scraps of paper! The best part is, since everyone loves them, homemade post it notes make great gifts!

You will need at least twenty five pieces of paper (they do need to be the same size, so if you are using scraps, you will need to cut them so they are they same) and a repositionable glue stick (you can buy this at the dollar store).

Step One:

Choose any color paper you want, in any size! Smaller sizes work best though. Make sure that your paper is all the same size, if not cut it now.

Step Two:

Using your repositionable glue stick, gently glue just the top ¼ inch to ½ inch of one sheet of paper. Stick the next piece of paper onto the glue, do your best to make sure the paper is even. Then, glue that sheet at the top again and repeat until all of the paper is stacked together.

That's it! Two simple steps to your own post it notes! Now, you can experiment with different colors of paper and different sizes too! Get creative and try making different shapes, multi color patterned stacks. You can even stamp the sides of the block if you want!

It's very simple to do, hold your block tightly together, so there is no space between the sheets of paper and then ink your chosen stamp as you usually would and stamp! You could even personalize each sheet of paper with fancy pens, markers or stamps, add your name across the top or monogram the top center of each sheet. There are so many things you can do!

If you are going to give your homemade post it notes as a gift, tie some decorative ribbon or string around the block, write a secret note on the last page, or better yet, write the steps to make them on the last page and when the recipient runs out, they can make their own! He or she will be so grateful for such a thoughtful gift that will actually be used! And I'll just bet, you will be asked for more!

What if there is no repositionable glue? Is it possible to use normal glue to stick?

  • Vanessa Hamlin2/3/2009

Yes, repositionable glue is different. It allows you to move and then re-stick the paper. YOu should be able to pick it up at your local dollar store. It does come in a glue stick form.

DOH! Is a repositionable glue stick different than a regular glue stick? That may be my problem!

I tried making this over the weekend and I failed miserably. Instead of Post-Its, I made a pad of scratch paper that was glued together at the top (mind you, that's not a bad thing). What did I do wrong? Did I use too much glue? Did I push the pages together too much? Can anybody help me figure it out? Thanks!

Christopher, you needed to use repositionable glue, did you?

What a wonderful idea! I hadn't thought of stocking stuffers. Thanks!

This would make a great christmas gift or gift for grand parent or someone special. Make the paper specific to that person and then make the post-it feature. I'm thinking stocking stuffer!

Very cool. These would make great stocking stuffers for Christmas. Excellent idea!
