Make Your Own "The Royal Tenenbaums" Inspired Costumes

"The Royal Tenenbaums" (2001) is a quirky movie about a dysfunctional, distant family of former child prodigies who reunites after their estranged father returns and announces that he is terminally ill. A "The Royal Tenenbaums" themed costume would be perfect for a group of people, and some of the costumes would be easy to make. Planning is crucial and you will be able to save money if you plan ahead and look for needed pieces on EBay or in thrift and vintage stores.

Adopted daughter Margot Tenenbaum, played by Gwyneth Paltrow, is a chain-smoking playwright married to a much older man. She has a sardonic tone, an emotionless-like stare, and spends a great deal of time gazing listlessly at a television in a bathroom. Margot's costume will need a long brown fur (or faux fur) coat worn over a blue striped dress with a polo-styled collar and pink gloves. She wore a short blonde bob with a deep side part held in place with a red barrette. Wear a lot of black eyeliner and a smoky eye with neutral lips. Carry a prop cigarette and a large vintage brown satchel.

Richie Tenenbaum (Luke Wilson) has become a recluse following an embarrassing televised tennis match. For a Richie costume, you'll need longer brown hair wrapped in a red, white, and blue headband as well as a beard and moustache. He wore an old brown jacket and matching slacks over a red, white, and blue (or plain blue) tennis-styled shirt and dark sunglasses. For shoes, wear dark loafers and white socks. Don't forget to accessorize with a wristband and tennis racket.

Chas Tenenbaum (Ben Stiller) is a financial genius and has two sons, but he's neurotic about safety after his wife died in a plane crash. He and his sons dress in bright red matching track suits. For this costume, wear curly short brown hair and find a red athletic jacket and pants with a white stripe down the sides. Eli Cash (Owen Wilson) was a friend of the family and always wanted to be a Tenenbaum. He is now a self-absorbed drug addict who writes Western novels. To put together an Eli Cash costume, find a blue western or "cowboy" styled long-sleeved shirt and blue slacks. Eli also wore a light colored cowboy hat and a brown western styled jacket with tassels. Carry a prop cigarette to complete the look.
