Make Your Own Valentine's Day Card

B. Dean
Valentine's Day is approaching us once again, and in these times of tough economics, it can become very expensive to make Valentine's Day special. One way to lessen the economic burden and make the day sentimental is to make your own Valentine's Day card for your loved one. This is also a good activity if you have small children who would benefit from helping in the making of the card. The child can feel as if they are participating in a special day usually set aside just for the parents to enjoy together. The card you make doesn't have to be the finest thing ever made, just as long as the thought comes from your heart.

The card can be made using simple materials, such as construction paper, glue, glitter, etc. More high quality items can be used, such as high quality papers and computer programs, with more touches added later. If you have children, they can help with the simpler touches, such as cutting out shapes and applying glue and glitter so they feel involved in the process, and the surprise of the card. More private touches can be added later by the parent.

Several different touches can be added to the card to make it your own, and in the end is more personal than looking through seemingly endless store bought cards that never seem to say the right thing. Oftentimes it seems like we settle on the one that merely comes the closest to what we are trying to say. If you make the card yourself, then the poem you write, (even the really cheesy ones!) or the long romantic statement is more to the point of how we truly feel about the other person and our relationship with them.

Another way to make the card more personal is to attach a picture of the two of you to the card. It doesn't have to be a perfectly posed studio photo, but can be a photo that reminds you both of a special time together. Just as long as the photo says something about how you feel, then it can even be the goofiest photo in your album! If you're feeling artistic, you can even draw your own picture or decorate the card with hand drawn shapes such as hearts. Stickers and other Valentine's Day themed artful touches can be found in craft and general department stores. In the end, if you make your own card, it is sentimental, personal, and inexpensive. The present purchased after this need not be so extravagant when accompanied by such a thoughtful card!

I am currently searching for a career that will finally suit me, but know I would best like to be a writer. I will always educate myself, and enjoy being a student.  View profile
