Just recently opened, the winery on North Eighth Street offers educational sessions to wine enthusiasts interested in learning the process making wine. Courses include everything from crushing grapes to fermentation, bottling, and labeling.
Founded by John Stires and Brian Leventhal, the Brooklyn Winery is truly a unique addition to the Williamsburg scene. Anyone interested in winemaking can enroll in five classes at the winery. Each class will allow participants to work with professional vintners in every aspect of making the wine from picking the grapes, crushing them, and barreling the juice.
The typical bottle of wine, from start to finish, takes about a year. A good chunk of that year is comprised of waiting for the wine to ferment and age. The principles of the process of adding sugar to the alcohol's yeast hasn't changed since ancient Greece.
Students will pay $600 to have access to the winery's facilities, the lessons, and 24 bottles of your final product. Once the wine is bottled, it is yours to keep. For a group effort, you can get an entire barrel, which is about 300 bottles, for just under $6,000.
If you are just interested in tasting wine that is also a possibility at the winery as there is also a wine bar available.
The Brooklyn Winery is located at 213 East Eight Street between Roebling Street and Driggs Avenue.
