There are plenty of opportunities for every skill set and area of interest. Volunteering goes beyond helping those in need. It also has great benefits for the volunteer. Whether you are a senior in high school or a senior in the community there is plenty to be gained from becoming a volunteer.
Help Others
One of the main reasons people become involved with volunteering is to be able to help others. Volunteering is a vital part of our schools and our community. It also serves families and youth. Helping someone by lifting their burdens is a great way to lift our own burdens as well.
Connect With the Community
Volunteering allows people from different backgrounds to come together for a common goal. Volunteers can become involved in all different aspects of the community, from the government to private businesses as well as non-profit organizations. It is a chance to feel involved and support important community resources.
Strengthen Your Resume
Volunteer experience on your resume will let future employers know you are a responsible, involved and hands on person. Additionally, volunteering is an opportunity to strengthen skills and develop new ones. Many people discover potential career paths they hadn't yet considered. Others are able to make professional contacts who will be crucial when it comes time to interview for a job. Volunteering on your resume will also let a future employer know you have good time management skills.
Saves Resources
By volunteering government agencies, non-profits and business can spend more money on local improvements and programs. It's estimated that value of the average volunteer is $15.39 an hour. That adds up quickly and that "money" comes right back to you in the form of community services and programs and more.
Help Yourself
Just as exercise or relaxation can reduce stress in our lives, volunteering also can reduce stress. Studies have shown that when we focus on someone other than ourselves, our usual tension producing patterns are interrupted and we have a greater sense of well-being. This good feeling goes beyond just giving us the warm fuzzies and actually may strengthen our immune system.
You Can Make a Difference
Every volunteer job is important and you can make a difference. Volunteers are needed in your community right now. Whatever your skills, background or interest, you can find a volunteer position that fits you perfectly. This year, make a New Year's Resolution that will have a positive impact on your life and the lives of those in your community: Volunteer!
