Instructions for Making a Satin and Lace Picture Frame
Place the right side of satin fabric on the backside of lace fabric. Lay the two pieces of fabric on the quilt batting and pin all three layers together with the silk pins. Place the quilt batting side of the fabric grouping down on a flat surface and position the picture frame in the center (it will be on the satin fabric), making sure the fabric overlaps the edge all the way around by at least one-inch. Using a ruler, draw a line one-inch away from the outer edge and all the way around the picture frame. Use the ruler again to mark a small dot in the center opening of the picture frame. Draw a line from this dot to each corner of the center opening of the picture frame. Remove the picture frame and cut along the line of the outer edge through all three fabrics. Cut along the lines from the dot to within one inch of the four corners of the inner opening.
Remove all silk pins. Apply a small amount of glue to the quilt batting and place it on the front of the picture frame. There should be a one-inch overlap of the quilt batting all the way around the outer edge. Let this dry. Next, trim the one-inch overlap back to one-half inch and trim the quilt batting in the inner opening to one-half inch.
Place the wrong side of the satin fabric over the quit batting, and fold the one-inch overlap around the outer edge of the picture frame to the back and glue in place. Trim the inner opening to one-inch, fold it to the back and glue in place. You may need to work with and trim any excess fabric to get nice looking creases in the corners. Let the glue dry.
Next, position the wrong side of the lace fabric over the satin fabric and attach it the same way as you did the satin fabric. Let the glue dry.
Glue the straight side of the lace trim all the way around the back outer edge of the picture frame, covering the raw edges of the satin and lace fabric. The right side of the lace trim should be facing the front and the sculptured side of the lace trim should be sticking out from the picture frames outer edge.
Attractively arrange the silk flowers in a cluster in one of the upper corners on the front of the picture frame and glue in place. Make a small bow out of the satin ribbon and glue underneath the cluster of silk flowers.
Glue your photograph to the edges of the inner opening on the back of the picture frame.
Cut a piece of satin fabric the length and width of the card stock with a one-inch overlap. Glue it to the card stock, folding the one-inch overlap to the back. Let it dry and then glue the wrong side of the covered card stock to the back of the picture frame. Position and glue the hanging attachments to the back and let dry.
Lastly, place your satin and lace picture frame in a decorative box, attach a card and give to your mother. Each time her eyes fall upon this lovely treasure hanging on her wall, she is sure to remember the thoughtfulness behind such a special Mother's Day gift.
