You will need these tools and materials:
Cutting board
Razor knife
Scissors
Ruler
Pencil
Red felt
White felt
3" x 3" wood squares
Glue
Star Pattern
Normally you find sets of coasters in a count of six. This project calls for eight, but your choice in how many you make is up to you.
Start by cutting out 16 red felt squares the same size as the wooden ones, 3" x 3". Set half of them aside for now. One at a time, center and draw around the star pattern onto the eight squares of red felt.
If you are really good with scissors you can cut these stars out. Don't mix them up. The star you cut out of one square needs to stay with it for now.
Next, one by one, take each cut out star, and trace around them on the white felt. Cut these white stars out, and place them with their corresponding red star.
Set each white star into their red outlined cutout. They should match up mostly perfectly. Now you see why you don't want to mix them up.
Scoot these to the side for now, and line up your wood squares side by side. Quickly draw out grid patterns in glue on each one. It does not have to be fancy or accurate.
Take your uncut red squares and place them on the wood pieces. Press firmly down. You can place a small book on each one and wait until they are dry. This keeps the felt from getting air pockets to push it up here and there.
Remove the books and place a thinner grid pattern of glue on them. Take the red trim and white stars, and place them on each coaster. Again, do something to keep the felt pressed down well.
When these are dry, you are done and ready to display your star coasters.
You can even finish them off with green felt bumpers on the underside to keep the wood from scratching up your fine furniture. With a little more imagination you can also make a storage container for them as well.

Post a CommentGreat idea. Thanks for including a photo!
Cute idea! I don't think I'd do a Lone Star theme, but holiday themes would make for nice decorations and gifts.
Very fun and patriotic idea. Excellent idea!
