Make a Swirly Frosty-the-Snowman Christmas Ornament

You can have a fun family time creating these simple yet elegant swirly snowman ornaments for Christmas. Make them as special gifts for grandparents, teachers, and other family members. This project can easily be adapted to the classroom as a surprise present for parents.

Supplies Needed for Each Ornament
1 clear flat disk ornament
1 white paint pen or white glitter pen
1 black paint pen
1 red paint pen
1 red ribbon
Optional: powdered snow or glistening snow flakes
Optional: fine glitter

Where to Find Supplies
Your local craft store should carry most of these supplies. The blank ornaments usually come in boxed sets of 4 or 6. DecoColor makes great opaque paint markers.

Step-by-Step Directions to Make Swirly Frosty the Snowman Christmas Ornaments
1. Create Frosty's swirly shape in 3 sections, starting from the top to avoid smearing the paint.

2. Make the top section by drawing a small swirly circle using the white paint pen.

3. Use a slightly larger swirly circle for the middle section. The middle section does not connect completely to the head section. Leave a small space open for the scarf.

4. Draw the largest swirly circle for the base section. This section does not need to connect solidly with the middle section, depending upon the look you want to achieve.

5. Draw the snowman hat using the black paint marker. Be careful to not smear the white paint.

6. Draw the scarf in between the head and middle sections using the red paint pen. You can make the scarf ends longer if want more of a wind blown look.

7. Sprinkle the optional fine glitter over the entire painted design while it is still wet.

8. Shake the ornament gently to remove any loose glitter.

9. Set aside to dry completely.

10. Use a paint pen to add your name and date to the back of the ornament. Allow to dry.

11. Remove the ornament top carefully.

12. Add optional powdered snow to the bottom 1/3 of the ornament for a fun look.

13. Re-attach the ornament top.

14. Cut a 6 to 8 inch piece from the red ribbon.

15. Tie the ribbon to the ornament top for hanging on the Christmas tree.

Options for Frosty the Snowman Swirly Ornaments
1. Add dots of white or silver paint around Frosty to resemble falling snow.

2. Draw a Frosty on both sides of the ornament, making sure that the first side is completely dry before starting the second.

3. Use a different scarf color like blue or green.

4. Make multiple (smaller) snowmen on the ornament to represent each of your children. Write each child's name below a snowman.

5. Use a green paint pen and add in some distant trees.

6. Create a snow dog companion for Frosty on the ornament.

7. Cut out a piece of decorative themed scrapbook paper and glue it to the back of the ornament so that it becomes a background for Frosty.
