Choosing Shirts for the T-Shirt Yarn
Not every t-shirt is a good choice for making t-shirt yarn. T-shirt yarn can only be made from the stretchy fabric of normal t-shirts. Any shirts with embellishments like screen-printing, embroidery, decals, or textured designs cannot be used. T-shirts with breast pockets can only be used up to the pocket level.
Both adult and children's t-shirts can be used to create t-shirt yarn. Of course, kid's t-shirts will only yield small amounts of this yarn. They are great for small crafts and accents for larger projects.
Creating the T-Shirt Yarn
Creating the t-shirt yarn is simple to do. Start at the bottom of the t-shirt and cut off the sewn hem. Then, use your sharp scissor to cut into the t-shirt at an angle. Cut a strip of the fabric about one inch wide. Continue cutting around the whole t-shirt at a slight angle. You will have a continuous strip of t-shirt yarn starting to form.
After the entire t-shirt is cut from hem to just under the arms, snip the end and get ready to form the yarn. This works best with t-shirts that are actually woven knit pattern. Most of them are, so do not worry.
Grab the end of the t-shirt yarn and pull it gently. It will automatically wind itself into a tube of fabric with the cut ends inside. Wind this into a ball just as you would regular yarn. Your t-shirt yarn is ready to use.
Crochet Craft Ideas for T-Shirt Yarn
The t-shirt yarn can be used in various crochet projects. Since it is a thick and chunky yarn, you should use a very large crochet hook and a rather loose stitch design. One project to use your t-shirt yarn for is a simple scarf and hat for winter. These cold weather accessories will keep you warm and comfortable. T-shirt yarn is never scratchy.
Another great crochet craft idea for t-shirt yarn is a rag rug. You can crochet a simple rug using granny square patterns or straight double crochet with the t-shirt yarn. You can use single crochet stitches for a tighter woven rug.
T-shirt yarn is versatile a fun. It is a great way to recycle your old shirts into new items.

Great idea.
This is a fabulous idea! Great for all those old, stained t-shirts. You could even dye an all-cotton shirt the color you want with RIT, before doing this, couldn't you?
