Make a Unique Rectangle Winter Snow Scene Ornament for About $3

Lyn McCallister
Blank ornaments come in a variety of shapes and sizes for customizing. One fun shape to try this year is a rectangle. Gather the kids together and create fun winter snow scene ornaments to give as gifts. Each ornament should cost about $3 to make, depending on the accessories that you purchase.

Supply List
Blank rectangle ornaments (these often come in boxed sets of 4; inquire at your local craft store)
Red ribbon
Hot glue gun
Scissors
Pencil
Ruler
Scrap paper
Scrapbook paper in winter snow themes or scenes
Snow drops (or other fake snow accent material)
Optional: Black or silver paint pen

Step-by-Step Instructions to Make Rectangle Winter Snow Scene Ornaments
1. Measure the flat surface portion of the back of your ornament. Some ornaments have rippled edges so be sure to not measure that portion.

2. Use the pencil and scrap paper to make a template using the measurements from step 1.

3. Place the template over the winter snow themed scrapbook paper to get an idea of what will show through the ornament.

4. Cut around the template once you have decided which part of the scrapbook paper that you want to show. Be sure to double-check the orientation of the ornament since some rectangle ornaments hang vertically and some hang horizontally. You want your winter snow scene to face the correct direction!

5. Place the ornament on top of the cut scrapbook paper section so you can see the winter scene.

6. Adjust the placement, as needed.

7. Remove the ornament from the paper.

8. Use the hot glue gun to carefully place a thin line of glue all around the edges of the right-side of the scrapbook paper.

9. Press the ornament to the scrapbook paper so that the glued right-side sticks to the back of the ornament. You should be able to see your winter scene paper through the glass. See the article photo for an example.

10. Allow to dry.

11. Take the top off the ornament.

12. Add some fake snow drops (or snow flakes) to your desired level. This step adds a nice dimension to your craft project and kids really enjoy it! The snow drops can be a bit messy so a paper plate under the project may come in handy.

13. Place the top back onto the ornament.

14. Cut a length of red ribbon, about 6 to 8 inches long.

15. Tie the red ribbon to the ornament topper for hanging on a tree.

16. Optional: Use the paint pen to add a phrase, date, or child's name to the ornament.

Photo Option for Rectangle Ornaments
Instead of creating a winter scene using scrapbook paper, make a photo ornament instead. Print a favorite up-close photo of your children, pets, or winter scene in a 3.5 x 5 inch size.

Then, follow the steps from above to size the photo appropriately and add the decorative snow drops. Be sure to add the children's names, ages, and the date to the ornament.
