Make Valentine's Day Coasters with Ceramic Tiles

Decoupage Repurposed Items with Cricut Die Cuts

Cyndee Kromminga
Make decoupaged coasters for Valentine's Day using wall tiles and a Cricut die cutter. The tiles I used were some I picked up at a yard sale, but you could also use tiles left over from a redecorating project. Basic ceramic tiles are also quite inexpensive to purchase from home improvement stores.

Standard wall tiles are a perfect size for coasters and are already waterproof. When adding paper to the tiles surface, the Mod Podge will create a waterproof seal over the paper.

I chose a red and white checked paper for the background and a contrasting pink for the added words and hearts. If you do not have a Cricut, paper die cuts can be purchased at your local craft store. Before I owned a Cricut, a local school allowed me to use their die cutter. It was not a Cricut, but free is good.

This project takes less than 30 minutes to create. It does take a few more hours to complete the layers of Mod Podge, as each layer needs to dry before a new one is applied.

Things you will need:
4 white ceramic tiles, 4 1/4-inches square
Red and white checked scrapbook paper, one sheet
Pink scrapbook paper, one sheet
Ruler
Scissors (paper cutter)
Cricut Expression
Doodletype Cricut cartridge
Mod Podge, matte
Sponge brush
16 sticky-backed felt circle pads
27 inches, 1-inch-wide wire-edge red ribbon

Step 1
Cut four, 4-inch squares from the red and white checked paper.

Step 2
Insert a Doodletype cartridge into your Cricut Expression. Place your pink paper on the cutting mat and load it into the machine. Be sure to adjust the paper size setting to the size of your scrapbook paper. If you are using a 12-inch square paper, you will not need to adjust the setting.

Step 3
Choose the "I Love You" image. Set the size to 3 inches and a quantity of four. Cut the images. Do not unload the paper.

Step 4
Choose the solid heart image. Set the size to 3/4 inch and a quantity of 16. Cut the images. Unload the paper.

Step 5
Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge over the surface of a tile. Center one checked square on the tile. Smooth out the paper to eliminate bubbles. Repeat on the remaining tiles.

Step 6
Starting with the first tile covered with a square, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge over the paper and top surface of the tile. Center an "I Love You" image on the tile and a heart in each corner. Apply a layer of Mod Podge over the entire surface. Repeat on the remaining tiles. Allow the Mod Podge to dry.

Step 7
Apply five more layers of Mod Podge to the surface of the coasters, allowing each layer to dry before applying a new one.

Step 8
Turn the coasters upside down. Apply a sticky-backed felt circle pad in each of the corners on the back of each coasters.

Step 9
Prepare the coasters to give as a Valentine's Day gift. Cut a 27-inch length of 1-inch-wide wire-edge ribbon. Stack the coasters and place them on the center of the ribbon's length. Bring the ends of the ribbon together and tie into a bow on top of the coasters.
