Make Your Workspace Feel Like Home

Julie Boehlke
We all have one whether it's a little nook in the corner of the kitchen or a small den we have refurbished to allow for our computer, book collection and of course those bills.

There has to be a space set aside to be able to separate house from state so to speak. Why not make this space look good while still being able to get the job done.

Get out the Paint

One way to start making things more homey is to get out the paint. You don't have to go out and buy a gallon, try using some left overs of the paint that you already have on hand. A little antique white and white mixed up will spruce things up a bit. What were you planning on doing with that last half gallon anyway? By just freshening up your at home work space will draw you in and make you want to spend more time in your home office. You want it to be a place that you enjoy to go to, not dread going in and having to pay those bills.

Reuse furniture you have

Well to make it somewhat pleasurable you will have to organize. Why not utilize the furniture you already have to help you, it doesn't have to be office furniture, try using an old dresser for file and paper storage, paint it up and make it look nice of course. Or if you want a bookshelf, don't throw away that old dresser with the broken knobs, take the drawers out and install shelves and then you have an instant and free book shelf. Try using an old butlers tray as a junk drawer to stash away unwanted or unsightly items.

Look to the garden shed

Don't throw out those old clay pots. Use them to store pens, pencils and scissors. Maybe you have an old wooden tool organizer or tool box you don't use, that can be converted over to an office drawer organizer, keep your white out, pens, paper clips and rubber bands sorted and easy to find. Those old large pots you don't know what to with, bring them inside and store magazines, newspapers and papers. The splash of color will add to the decor. An old rake can be painted and hung upside down to store keys to different items that you need to keep track of.

Home Accent Pieces

You know those to cute gotta buy em now Home accent pieces that you picked up at flea markets or on clearance at Hobby Lobby that currently have no place to call home? Why not implement them into paperweights, book ends or even give them new life by just adding to the decor. An antique glove shaped ring holder that serves no purpose could be used as a paperweight or a clever decor piece.

Raid Grandmas Attic

Those old pointy metal message holders are adorable to add to your desk to create a laid back feel. Old prints in antique frames can add a homey touch also. Display those vintage books that grandma used to read to you that you just can quite part with. The look of stacked antique books creates a flair of its own. You could even add a desk lamp to the top of that pile of books.

Change your desk

If you have your own office space at home, why not pitch that cold heartless looking commercialized desk and trade it on for a long table. Even an old dining room table and one matching chair can serve as a homey attractive space. Add a little paint and some new fabric to that chair to create a personalized look.

Who said the kitchen is the most popular spot in the home? With these tips maybe you will want to have your guests come by to see your office instead.
