Make This Writer's Block Go Away!

L. Vincent Poupard
All writers have had times where they cannot figure out where to go next. We sit there and can't decide where we want to go with out writing, and can't think of anymore good ideas. If writer' block hits you, there are steps that you can take that may break you of your block.

Take a Break:

The first thing that you need to do if you have been a victim of writer's block is to walk away and take a break. Try to free your mind of the anxiety that is caused by writer's block. The longer you stay there staring at your blank notebook, the worse your block may become.

Try Another Field of Writing:

Focus on writing something else. If I gain writer's block while working on a novel, I will stop working on the novel for a while and write an article or two for Associated Content, or other publication. I have also written many short stories when having a mental block from my novel.

This actually has a few extra benefits. First off, you expose yourself to another field of writing. When I first attempted to write articles, I found it difficult. I am becoming more and more comfortable with article writing now.

Secondly, even though you have a block, you can still be productive in the other area that you distract yourself with. A major problem that is caused by writer's block is the fact that money does not come in when writing does not go out.

Finally, moving temporarily moving to another field of writing will help keep the creative juices flowing. If you do not make an attempt to keep your writing going, you may lose part of your personal style and technique.

Try Working on Another Area of Your Chosen Field:

If I run into a bout with writer's block on my novel, I will sometimes move to another area of the novel. If I am at a block over the plot, I will move to character creation. If I can't add anymore to the characters, I will think of great quotes that my characters would come up with.

This keeps the production going. It can also add extra depth to the story as a whole.

Do Something You Enjoy Doing to Relax:

Do you enjoy cooking? If you get writer's block, walk into the kitchen and make yourself something. Maybe you enjoy taking a bath in the middle of the day. This relaxing act could help your creative juices to flow again.

Doing an act that you enjoy during a period of writer's block will distract you. This will give your mind time to recharge, and may put you back on track.

Read:

If you are someone who enjoys writing short stories or novels, make sure that you have books and magazines that are in your genre of writing. Getting fresh ideas from other writers can help bring new ideas and directions to your writing.

If you are an article writer, grab a newspaper or magazine. Look at what other people are writing and this may also put your thoughts back into order.

Writer's block is a something that can cause a lot of anxiety among writers. Using one or two of these techniques may cause you to get back on track, and break you of your block.
