Make Your Yard Sale Successful with These Tips

Jennifer Wright
How many times have you had a yard sale and expected to make a bundle of cash, only to find yourself sitting there for hours empty handed? I have had quite a few unsuccessful yard sales over the years and learned a few things in the long run. In this article you will discover several ways that you can make your yard sale a success.

1. Location, location, location. Where you are going to have your yard sale is definitely a very large part of how successful it will be. The best place to have a yard sale is in a high traffic area. If you live out of town or in an area where there is not much traffic than there are a couple things that you can do. One would be to make arrangements with a friend who does live in a high traffic area to have your yard sale at their home. Another would be to make large colorful signs and post them all over where people are sure to see them.

2. Start Early. A very large majority of avid yard sale shoppers will be out an about around 8:00am, if not earlier. So get your butt out of bed and get into gear. It helps to prepare the night before by either taking everything outside or getting it as close to the door as you can for in the morning.

3. Put price tags on your items. It may take a little more work than just hauling things out into the yard but people really do prefer not to ask you how much you want for something. If they want to haggle the price with you than they will haggle, but for the most part people will just give you what you're asking and then in the long run you will make more money because you are not being talked down in your price.

4. Occupy the children. I know how hard it is to have a yard sale with your kids running around. Especially if you want to sell some of the things that they particularly like. This is a tip that worked wonders for our family. I had my daughter run a lemonade stand to draw in the customers. (Who wouldn't stop and buy lemonade from a little girl?) I also made cookies for her lemonade stand. She made quite a bit of cash off of the lemonade stand itself and also made our yard sale more profitable. That was one of our most successful yard sales ever.

So as you can see, there are a couple obvious tips and a couple not so obvious ones. As obvious as they may appear, they are easy tips to overlook when preparing for a yard sale. Perhaps adding one or two of these to your yard sale will help you to make more money and get rid of all that stuff that's been taking up space in your home.

I'm having a yard sale in a few weeks and I think it will be tough to keep my 4 year old entertained. I think I might set up a station for him, hopefully he is old enough for that tip! (=

Good tips. About the price tags though. I think it depends on where you are. I've had many yardsales and sometimes people like the tags, but sometimes it puts them off. They think you won't come down on the price. It can go both ways.
