Makeup Alley is a huge gold mine of beauty tips, product reviews, reference photos, and much much more. The site has various chat boards: makeup, fashion, fragrance, bath and body, skin care, nails, weddings, and physical fitness. They also have cafe (for off-topic conversations) and a food board, since food is always a popular topic.
The chat boards are archived, so you can do a search for a topic, and the conversations themselves are well-organized so you can see what was written in response to what.
Members can create a profile and display pictures. Many members put up pictures of makeup items and makeup looks (otherwise known as "face of the day"). So if you want to see how a certain color of eyeshadow looks on a person, or what colors people pair it with, you just do a search and find what you need.
One huge aspect of the site is swapping. Members put up lists of makeup and other beauty items that they would like to trade, along with wish lists of items they'd like to trade for. People then contact each other to swap items. This is a great way to get rid of unwanted items and try new things for free, or just stock up on your old favorites for free.
Most people find Makeup Alley by doing searches for reviews of beauty products, and once they find the site they are not disappointed. There are reviews for virtually any product available today. Members rate the products on a scale of one to five. Though everyone has different experiences, I have always had good luck buying products that have received high ratings. This helps me save money - I don't waste money on bad products, and by doing a little research I'm able to figure out which products are the best buy for the money.
The boards at Makeup Alley are mostly friendly and filled with helpful people. There are many members that have been there a long time and, while friendly, may seem less welcoming to newer members in that newer members may not receive as many responses. But that's life - people who've known each other longer tend to get comfortable and not reach out to new people. The cafe board could actually be described as the "debate" board, as people discuss every topic imaginable and naturally not everyone sees eye to eye. This can result in some arguments but typically people agree to disagree.
Whether you want to trade makeup, look for reviews, or chat with some people, Makeup Alley is the place to be.
