Let's talk about some mineral makeup. If you are a mineral makeup, you probably know that mineral makeup is a bit pricey - for a good product, that is. Right now we are going to take a look at E.L.F.'s mineral collection.
E.L.F. sells different makeup product, including mineral makeup, for low-low prices. But how does E.L.F. compare to the other high-up name brand companies? Let's look at E.L.F.'s Mineral Foundation: Fair. During this review we will be looking at the packaging, texture, color, coverage, and application life.
NOTE: I have personally tested all makeup products I review.
Packaging: ***** (5 stars of 5)
Yes, E.L.F.'s Mineral Foundation: Fair is starting of with on a good foot with 5 stars, but this is just the packaging, so let's not get too excited. I like the packaging or casing, whichever you would prefer. Mineral Foundation: Fair comes in a circular casing with a clear-plastic bottom and screw on and off black capping. Inside the casing - a small sifter sits, lodged onto the top of the casing. There are small holes in the sifter that allows a small amount of product to come through at a time. This Mineral Foundation is packed full of product. Honestly, for the price, I was expecting sample size amount.
Texture: *** (3 stars of 5)
If you are familiar with mineral foundation loose powder, then you are most likely used to the mess that comes with the product. If you are not careful, the minerals will get everywhere! It causes a huge mess if you're not careful. The texture looks rather 'dusty' once applied to skin and you get a caked makeup look if you apply more than one coat of foundation. I can usually avoid the caked on look by dampening a cotton ball and lightly sweeping it over the foundation covered areas. This will catch left over makeup and give you a more even textured and natural look. When you touch the top of a foundation powder brush to this foundation, you will notice the product bunch up onto the top of the brush and it looks really thick and heavy; a good mineral foundation will not do this.
Color: **** (4 stars of 5)
I, myself, am not a fair skinned individual. I am Mexican/British so my skin is a strange mix of yellow and medium tan. I have no idea how to describe it. So I used the fair version of Mineral Foundation on a friend. Her skin is very white; probably as white as they come. This foundation looked good with one coat, but I was looking for a little more coverage on her. A second coat - pinkish tones were coming into play. Once applied for the second time all over her face, she looked like a very soft-baby pink. Now the reason coloring didn't receive a lower rating is because everyone has their own version of fair. I feel she was too fair for this form of fair foundation because the coloring started off good when there was just a little applied. This is something everyone will have to test on their own personal color.
Coverage: **** (4 stars of 5)
If you are seeking to cover freckles - do not count on this foundation to give you the results you are looking for. Yes, this foundation does cover, but freckles are not its forte. The coverage is okay. If you have a little redness, say on your cheeks, and would like it covered, this will work out, but don't expect amazing coverage for acne, scars, excessive redness, and other situations along the lines. I'm not going to give coverage a lower rating because it does cover, but it's very light coverage.
Application life: *** (3 stars of 5)
I would personally rate the application life a little below average. This mineral foundation lasted about 6 hours with a max coverage. After the 6 hour mark - things start going down hill and you have to touch up. Touching up can be a little difficult on the go because of that cake-like affect this foundation tends to send off. I did not try to apply a primer under the application of this mineral foundation, but primers will add a little life. If you get this foundation and aren't satisfied with the application life, I would suggest a good primer.
All-in-all, I would not recommend this product to someone who is just getting started with mineral makeup, especially foundation because these tend to be applied to the entire face area. If you are experienced with mineral foundation and are looking for a cheap mineral foundation, I would give this a go. You may be able to tweak it a little to fit your needs. This product received an overall rating of 3.8 stars of 5 (read on to find out why this product received this rating): the bad - a 'dusty' residue, cake-like look with a couple applications, poor application life; the good - nice, light coverage and good packaging (easy to use and portable).
