Making the Balance Between Motherhood and Work a Success

How to Manage Your Work Life and Your Home Life

Finding that perfect balance between work and family life is one of motherhoods toughest tasks. You not only have economic pressure but you have the new added pressure of caring for a little one. Sometimes it is hard to leave them and return to work, but in some cases it is good both for the mother and child as part of development that will aid them down the road when separation is inevitable.

This best way to balance work and home life is not to let either over run the other. When you are at work, you must remain focused on your job and trust that your child is being taken care of by whatever caregiver you have selected. Aside from emergencies, there should be no calling to check on the child while at work and you should instruct the caregiver to apply the same rule. Only call in cases of emergency. It's okay on occasion, to call during lunch, or a break if you know there may be something that you need to check on, but don't make it a habit. You can't concentrate on your job and give your employer the best performance if part of you is still at home wondering about a diaper changes or how nap time is going. Try to maintain a professional image while at work and save the mothering for after work.

When you get home, or pick up your child, work is over. Don't take it home with you. Don't think about it and don't talk about it with your spouse or any other adult you may have handy. This is family time. Whether it's spent eating dinner, playing games, or going for a stroll in the park, it's not about work and you need to pretend you are not even employed. Cherish the time you have and enjoy being together. Make those memories count and that way tomorrow when you are sitting at your desk you won't be riddled with guilt about having taken home the Jones report, skipping time with your child to get ahead on your job.

Balancing work and home life can be done and people do it every day. It's not always going to be easy and it will take some disciple, but if you stick to your guns and refuse to let one over run the other you will find the balance comes together perfectly.

  • When you are on your job that should be your main focus.
  • When you are spending time with your family, work should never come in to play.
  • A balance that works for everyone can be achieved.
It is not a good habit to call to check on your child throughout the day when you are at work.
You should never take your work home with you, as it interferes with quality family time.
