Making Charitable Contributions in Denver

If You've Got No Money Honey, Donate Your Time

Denver has volunteer opportunities to suit any talent or skill level. Volunteering isn't just about soup kitchens. You can volunteer to plant trees, build homes and so much more. How about being a Girl Scout troop leader or a Big Brother? You might also think about making blankets for needy newborns or some other non-affiliated volunteer activity.

2011 Volunteer Fair (Denver Post Lobby April 15 from 10am to 2 pm) - Here's an awesome place to find ways to contribute to local charities. This is a meet and greet for more than 75 non-profit agencies that need your help. You'll be sure to find a volunteer position that suits your schedule and talents. At the very least, you'll get an idea of what avenue you'd like to pursue.

Metro Volunteers (303-282-1234) - Metro Volunteers is a charitable organization with strong ties in the Denver business community. They provide classes on volunteering and multiple volunteer opportunities. Some classes require payment, while others are free. You can go to their website for details on the types of volunteer activities they're involved in.

Mile High United Way - This organization has a myriad of volunteer opportunities. Their website has a feature that allows you to select from volunteer opportunities according to your interests and location. Volunteer projects are designed to suit individuals, small groups and large corporate groups. Wouldn't it be great if you could get the whole office into volunteering for a Mile High United Way charity?

Volunteers of America (Colorado Branch) - This organization has been around for many years and hopefully many more to come. Volunteers of America benefits the City Harvest Food Bank, Meals on Wheels and Rainbow House, to name a few. Sign up to be a Denver Volunteers of America volunteer online or by calling 303-297-0408. Handymen welcome!

Individual Opportunities - If you'd rather, there are plenty of things you can do to volunteer on your own in Denver. Children's Hospital is always appreciative of donations for patients. Beautify your neighborhood by picking up trash. Give a single parent a hand up by providing furniture or toys. Tutor students in your subject of choice. You know your talents best. Choose the opportunity that suits your skill, availability and interests to maximize your effectiveness.
