Making Compost from Kitchen and Garden Scraps

Peter Moore
If you have ever used compost in your garden you know how beneficial it can be. No matter what you buy it will never be as good as compost that you produced yourself. You can easily make your own compost with various scraps from your home each year. This will give you a great garden and save you a ton of money.

You need to find a shaded place in your garden for your compost. The dirt on the ground should drain well. You can either purchase a composter or build your own container. For the first time I recommend purchasing one. Next time you can build your won.

Now lay down brown organic junk on the bottom to about a half of a foot. A great time to do this is during fall and you can use all of your dead leaves. After that you are going to place fresh material. You can use all your kitchen scraps like eggs and other foods on top here. This should be about two to three inches in height. You can also use grass, manure and other green material. Now repeat this process until you get to at least 3 feet in height. For your first time I don't recommend going over five feet. While you are doing this make sure to water after each layer. Once this is done cover your compost with a tarp. The tarp will keep rain water away and heat in. Also it gives the moisture in from the water in also.

After about 48 hours mix everything in the bin together to do this I use a pitchfork. You will notice the heat coming off the pile. Don't worry this is part of the process. Make sure you keep the pile moist while its cooking just don't ever soak the pile just keep it moist.

When you start noticing its cooling down flip the pile to get it cooking again. Repeat this over and over again to keep it cooking. You can keep adding to the pile also during the time. It is recommended keeping the pieces small on top so it's easier to breakdown.

You will know your compost is ready when the pile becomes dark and crumbles away. The smell will reflect ammonia. When this happens you are ready to add it to your garden. Trust me your plants will love it and the best part all you used was parts that would get thrown away.
