Making Creative Rainy Day Fun: Rainy Day Activities for Kids

Cicely A. Richard
Rainy days can make motherhood a bit of a challenge, especially if you have an active toddler. They want constant attention and constant entertainment. Parenting skills can be put to the test at these times. I know. Every summer, the Southwest has a monsoon season that lasts from late June to early August. This past season was especially challenging to me because, in addition to having a four year old at home, I was sick as well.

Many parents rely on DVDs and television to entertain their children on rainy days. Don't get me wrong. "The Little Mermaid" and "The Sound of Music" were my saviors on days were I was just not energetic enough to run around. However, I didn't rely on this to keep her constantly entertained, mainly because I didn't want to hear DVDs all day and my daughter likes to play. In reality, all mothers need to entertain a child is inexpensive rainy day supplies.

Books, crayons, and cheap toys are necessary items for rainy day fun. I always get simple toys and kids stuff at places like Family Dollar or The Dollar General. That way, if she breaks the toys or messes them up, I only spent a few dollars. I always keep their coloring books on hand for rainy days or any other day. After we color, sing and write on most of the rainy days, we talk about the rain. During monsoon season, we talked about the rain, thunder and lightening.

The best thing about doing our rainy day activities is after the rain stops. I take her outside, and she shovels mud and sand in her bucket. I think the best interaction doesn't have to cost a lot, and rainy days are good days to give your child lessons about the weather.
