Making Decisions Based on Logic or Emotion: Which is Best?

SJD
It's been said by many that half the population make their decisions using logic while the other half make their decisions using their emotions. Have you ever though about how you truly make your decisions in life? It's something that every person should consider.

Quite often the two will collide and it's imperative that you are able to work successfully with a person of the opposite trait as you. Thus, how do you do this? Well, the first thing to consider is how you make these decisions.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do you write a pro/con list when making decisions?
  • Do you analyze the decision carefully and weigh it against the facts you have?
  • Do you consider what your gut feeling is?
  • Do you follow your heart or your brain?

If you often find yourself writing a pro/con list or analyzing the decision carefully against fact than you probably use logic. While if you often rely on your gut or your heart than you probably base you decisions on your emotions most often.

Is one or the other better? This has been a long debate, and while many people will argue either way, I think the most common and realistic response is neither. Perhaps however, a combination of both is the best way to look at this. All decisions should be considered used some logic and facts, but emotion and heart is always a healthy thing as well. Afterall, it is your life and you need to be happy in it, so in your heart you don't feel like it will benefit you or make you happy, well than why are you considering it?

It's important to recognize this early on because the odds are strong that you one day end up in a relationship with a person of the opposite trait. You need to know how you can successfully make decisions if this is the case. Your personal life isn't the only place it could occur either. The workplace is another common place for such situations.

Now, if you do ever find yourself in such a situation prepare yourself as much as possible. This means you should recognize that this is a possibility, and that even if someone is using different methods for their decisions leading them to different conclusions this doesn't necessarily mean they are wrong. It's essential to remember that people are different and to hear each other out. Make sure you give everyone a chance to communicate their decisions and reasons. It doesn't mean it will always be easy, but it will give you a greater appreciation for other's ideas and reasons and it will give you a greater understanding of what kind of person and decision maker you are.
