What if the parents to be are expecting twins? Should there be two cakes? Should there be one large cake? How does one go about making a diaper cake for twins?
Using diapers for newborns is a great idea, but alternatively - you could let the mom and dad enjoy the pretty focal point and use diapers that are meant for three to six month old infants. This will create larger tiers and make the cake more of a focal point too.
If the sexes of the babies are known, and one is a boy and one is a girl it is a good idea to make two separate cakes. If two separate cakes are not made it might get confusing with the diaper types.
When making the diaper cake for twins it is a good idea to make the cake at least twice the size as you would a regular diaper cake. To begin making a regular diaper cake you remove the diapers from the packages, and begin to roll them with the top of the diaper facing towards the inside. This will prevent the diaper from becoming ruined by the process. The best part of this gift is the practical nature, and therefore we don't want to ruin the inside of the diapers. After the diaper has been tightly rolled, secure it with elastic around the middle.
Roll enough diapers to begin the first tier. For twins, there should be ten to fifteen diapers around the inside of the cake. A diaper cake for twins is going to be a quite a bit larger than a diaper cake for one baby, as double the diapers is needed! Secure these with elastic, and place a layer of diapers around the outside of the cake. Again, secure these with elastic. The diapers are movable and twistable and therefore will be easy to maneuver to make it look the way that it should.
The second layer of cake will have seven to eight diapers around the middle, secure these within elastic. Again, layer additional diapers on the outside of the tier to create width.
With the third and fourth tiers judge accordingly using a third less each time the center is created.
Place a large rubber band on the outside of these tiers, two if necessary to keep them in place and cover with a ribbon. Be sure to attach the ribbon to it, not the diaper cake. We want to preserve the diapers. Layers can be interchanged for gifts by removing a diaper roll and inserting rolled up clothing, or bottles.
Once you have all of the desired tiers finished, and they are arranged and appropriate in size it is time to choose a cake round. These complete the look of the cake and are available at your local craft store. Measure the diaper cake for twins, and decide which cake round is appropriate.
With this large of a diaper cake for twins it is a good idea to ensure that the cake is secured to the cake board. This can be done by carefully inserting a wooden dowel into the center of the cake. Keep in mind that if you use more than three tiers than you may require two wooden dowels to secure the cake.
