Making a Difference in the World

Brandon Elliott
Every time I hear someone say they want to make a difference in the world, I laugh to myself. No one realizes how big of an impact they make every day. Every action you take influences someone in some way. Each breath you exhale helps trees and plants survive. Riding in a car, you are destroying the environment, contributing to global warming, and reducing the amount of fossil fuels on Earth at the same time. By throwing a piece of garbage out the window, you are contributing to greenhouse gases and destroying the environment.

Something that not many people realize is that everything you do on a daily basis changes the entire course of history. Throwing that one plastic cup out the window might kill thousands of trees in the long run. It might cause a species to become extinct. Maybe I am exaggerating, but that's something to think about.

Everyone wants to be a hero; everyone wants to be somebody. They want their name to be in big flashing lights on the Vegas strip for discovering the cure to cancer. In all reality, your chances of being widely famous aren't good. However, there are easy ways to make a smaller, yet respectable impact on many people's lives.

Making a difference in the world is such a vague phrase, in my opinion. There is an almost infinite number of ways the everyday average person can make a big impact on the world. Saying "Hi" or "Good Morning" to someone might not seem like a lot, but it might affect that person more than you think. Maybe that person is in a spell of terrible luck and is considering suicide. Saying a simple "good morning" to them might just save their life. The prevention of them committing suicide might stop another person from committing suicide, so on and so on. Every good action you take will cause another chain of good actions. Kindness goes a long way, so the next time you belittle someone, just think what kind of negative impact you are having on the world.

In my honest opinion, the best way to make a difference in the world is to be yourself, choose to love rather than hate, and be kind to everyone you come in contact with. Don't put people down just for the fun of it. Earn their respect and show them compassion. Be a leader and start a trend for the good of all people.

Go make a difference in the world.

I've always tried to live my life like this. I try my hardest to be a kind person in the hopes that it will makes their lives better. I know that a lot of the people who have influenced me the most probably have no idea how much their small acts meant to me.

interesting stuff. We never know the good we can do, just by being there.

Interesting take on this - I however believe that when someone says they wish to make a difference or leave a mark on this world they specifically mean a good mark or a good difference. not the day to day things such as breathing and things like that.

We obviously cannot make a difference in the whole world, but we can make one in our own little corner of it. Courtesy, kindness, generosity, compassion, a willingness to help others in your own social circle will make a difference in YOUR world.
