Making Dinner on Valentine's Day

Charles Bruce-Brown
A Valentine's Day alternative to the conventional dinner out on the town would be dinner at home. Whether it is the idea of one partner to cook for another or both partners decide to cook a romantic dinner together this can be a very good choice of plans. One of the issues with making Valentine's plans is the fact that most restaurants have either filled their reservation slots early or they choose not to offer reservations and therefore have a very long waiting time if you decide to take your chances.

If you are planning to cook dinner for your partner the first step is to figure out the types of food your partner enjoys eating and any food allergies or specific eating requirements such as vegetarianism that your partner may have. Keep in mind that you will need to choose dishes that you know how to prepare in order to avoid a disaster that could come with experimental or first time cooking of a dish you are not familiar with. The key to a successful meal preparation is planning before you begin to prepare the meal. Any tasks that can be completed ahead of time such as cutting, sauces that can be made ahead of time and refrigerated, anything that will make the last minute putting together of the meal easier should definitely be considered. Also keep in mind the romantic factor of your meal and try to choose some foods that you can feed to each other, keeping the meal playful and sexy, perfect for a Valentine's Day dinner!

Consider also the setting for your romantic meal. Candles immediately provide an intimate and romantic setting for any occasion and are perfect to set the tone of the evening. Choose music that will inspire romantic feelings in both of you and have it playing at a sound level that will allow for intimate conversation, but provide a romantic background.

If both partners decide to make dinner as a shared experience, you might consider taking a cooking class together for a dish that you both decide on and then put into practice what you have learned in your class. This provides another level to the Valentine's Day celebration, as you have the shared experience of learning something new, which increases intimacy in couples. The same rules apply for setting a romantic atmosphere with candles, music, anything that makes the dinner feel special and unique to the both of you.
