Making Egg Trees Usher in Spring

Being a Colorful Accent, These Decorative Trees Are Enjoyed by All

Mary Martin
Long gone are the days when real eggs were carefully emptied and saved to create an Easter Egg Tree. Brightly colored plastic eggs are still used to make egg trees in yards and almost demand attention. But there are many decorative craft eggs available which look very realistic; these craft eggs make egg trees for interior decorations that are almost elegant in appearance. They may look as delicate as real eggs and yet they are very durable and may be used for several years.

Decorate the Eggs

Rub on transfers were used to decorate the eggs with butterflies, bees and ladybugs. The transfers are easy to use and conform well to the shape of the eggs. I chose natural colored eggs and designs of insects for a nature theme. I can add a few Easter decorations around the base of the egg tree later to use the egg tree as a holiday decoration.

Create the Tree

The tree is a collection of loose sticks placed in a vase. It would be so cute if you had pussy willow branches! But any bunch of sticks will do. If you are lucky enough to find a small branch with multiple twigs to tie the eggs on it will both fill the vase faster and hold more eggs. Just see what you can find to use. Make sure that the twigs/branches are dry and clean.

Place the twigs/branches in a sturdy, heavy vase or jar you already have. Arrange the twigs so that the ones in the middle are taller; surrounded by shorter twigs/branches. You may need to trim the bottoms of the twigs to get the desired effect. Play with the arrangement of the sticks until you are satisfied with the effect.

Attach the Eggs

I used the raffia on the package to tie the eggs to the tree branches. The raffia is easily cut into four eight inch pieces and then each piece cut into three strips; twelve raffia lengths in all Each raffia length is then glued to the eggs and is easy to tie onto the tree branches. *1/4 in craft ribbon may also be used.) The eggs are almost weightless and the glued ribbon will be attached securely.
